## Race weekend guide (checked 2026-10-15)

Academy HYROX Houston brings four days of racing to the huge convention hall at NRG Park, just south of the Texas Medical Center. Early April is warm and humid but not yet summer-hot. The one thing to know is that the park went back to its old name, Reliant Park, in 2026, so the hall, gates and rail station may be signed "Reliant" rather than "NRG."

### Race weekend at a glance

- **Dates:** Thursday 1 April to Sunday 4 April 2027
- **Venue:** NRG Center, now signed as Reliant Center
- **Address:** NRG Park, 1 Fannin St, Houston, TX 77054. The venue lists the event entrance as Gate 10, at Kirby Drive and McNee Road (8600 Kirby Drive).
- **Nearest public transport:** The METRORail Red Line stops at the park's own station off Fannin Street, listed by the venue as Reliant Park station (Stadium Park/Astrodome on older maps). The venue says to use Gate 2 from the train.
- **Divisions:** The race schedule hadn't been published as of 15 October 2026. The event page confirms age-group divisions with ceremonies after each one.
- **Also on site:** HYROX Youngstars for ages 8 to 15, the HYROX Entertainment Zone with partners, and the Thunderdome viewing area

### Getting to the venue

**From George Bush Intercontinental (IAH):** Take METRO's 500 IAH Express bus to downtown, then ride the METRORail Red Line south to the Reliant Park station. A taxi or rideshare is simpler with bags.

**From Hobby Airport (HOU):** Rideshare or taxi is the most straightforward option, since there's no direct rail link.

**From downtown, Midtown and the Museum District:** The Red Line runs along Main Street and Fannin Street through all three, then past Hermann Park and the Texas Medical Center to the venue. It's a one-seat ride from most central hotels.

### Where to stay

Base yourself near the Red Line so you can skip parking. Downtown has the widest hotel choice and the most restaurants. The Museum District is greener and closer, next to Hermann Park and its running trail.

- **Hotel ZaZa Museum District:** A boutique hotel with a spa in the Museum District, a few Red Line stops north of the venue.
- **Marriott Marquis Houston:** A big downtown hotel at 1777 Walker Street with a Texas-shaped lazy river on its rooftop deck, good for loosening up after the race.
- **Magnolia Hotel Houston:** At 1100 Texas Avenue downtown, with a rooftop plunge pool and a 24-hour gym included in the stay.
- **The Lancaster Hotel:** A small historic hotel at 701 Texas Avenue in the downtown Theater District.

### Gyms for pre-race training

- **Sigma Performance Training (Upper Kirby):** At 3311 Richmond Avenue. It calls itself a licensed HYROX facility with certified coaches and offers a free trial session.
- **HNS Training Facility (East End):** At 929 Normandy Street. It says it's an official HYROX affiliate and lists a $20 gym drop-in, $30 classes and a free three-day pass.
- **Breach Fitness (Greater Heights):** At 1025 West 19th Street, running HYROX-focused training. Your first class costs $25.
- **Urban Athletics (Heights):** Offers official HYROX programming through its app at its Heights and EaDo gyms. No day pass is listed, so contact it first.

### Where locals run

- **Hermann Park Marvin Taylor Trail (Museum District):** A shaded 3.2 km (2-mile) loop of decomposed granite under live oaks, flat and soft underfoot. Take the Red Line to the Hermann Park/Rice University station.
- **Buffalo Bayou Park (Buffalo Bayou):** A 3.7 km stretch of parkland west of downtown between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive, with trails on both banks. Run out and back from downtown hotels.

### Where to eat and fuel up

- **Goode Co. Taqueria (Upper Kirby):** At 4902 Kirby Drive, serving breakfast seven days a week from 7 a.m. (8 a.m. on weekends). Good for tacos and eggs before a morning heat.
- **The Breakfast Klub (Midtown):** A Houston classic at 3711 Travis Street, near the Red Line. Order the chicken and waffles or catfish and grits after the race. It closes at 2 p.m.
- **Original Ninfa's on Navigation (East End):** At 2704 Navigation Boulevard. Mama Ninfa served tacos al carbon here in 1973, the dish that became known as fajitas. A great post-race feast.
- **Goode Co. Barbeque (Upper Kirby):** The original at 5109 Kirby Drive, serving mesquite-smoked brisket and ribs on jalapeño cheese bread. Save it for after you finish.

### Race weekend events and parties

The confirmed extras are HYROX Youngstars, the HYROX Entertainment Zone with partners, the Thunderdome viewing area, and age-group ceremonies after each division. As of 15 October 2026, no official after-party, expo or community run had been announced. Check HYROX's official channels and the title sponsor Academy Sports + Outdoors closer to the date.

### After the race

**Recovery:**

- **Trellis Spa (Uptown):** The Houstonian's day spa at 111 North Post Oak Lane. Book a 50-minute treatment to get access to its pools and soaking pools.
- **Marriott Marquis Houston (Downtown):** Hotel guests can float the rooftop lazy river to loosen their legs.

**Things to do:**

- Spend an afternoon at the **Museum of Fine Arts, Houston** in the Museum District.
- Drive down to **Space Center Houston** on NASA Parkway to see Johnson Space Center.
- Walk **Buffalo Bayou Park** at dusk to see the bats leave the **Waugh Bridge** colony.
- Stroll **Hermann Park**, which is right on the Red Line.

### Local insights

- **Tap your card on METRO:** Bus and METRORail fares are $1.25. Tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard, Amex or Discover card, or Apple Pay or Google Pay, and you get free transfers for three hours. Use the same card or phone every time, since a physical card and the same card in your phone wallet count as two different payment methods.
- **Buy a day pass:** A $3 day pass from the platform machines gives unlimited local bus and rail rides until 2 a.m. the next day.
- **Look for the new name:** NRG Park became Reliant Park again in August 2026. Your race emails may still say NRG, but the gates and rail station say Reliant.
- **Buy parking in advance:** If you drive, Reliant Park sells event parking through JustPark. Passes are valid only for that event and can't be refunded.
- **Plan for humidity and storms:** Average April highs are around 26 to 27°C (79 to 80°F), with lows of 15 to 17°C (60 to 62°F) and humidity around 73%. Expect seven or eight rainy days in the month, with the odd strong thunderstorm, so carry a light rain jacket.
- **Fajitas are a Houston original:** The dish was born at Ninfa's in the East End, so a post-race plate there is a local rite.
- **Use the Red Line as your spine:** Downtown, Midtown, the Museum District and the Medical Center are all on it, so you won't need a car.

### Race-day tips for this venue

- **Use Gate 10 if driving, Gate 2 from the train.** Reliant Park lists Gate 10 at Kirby and McNee for Reliant Center events, and Gate 2 for rail riders.
- **Bring ID to check in.** Nobody can check in for you, and registration opens 90 minutes before your division's first start wave.
- **Check your start time three days out.** Individual start times are linked about three days before the race and can't be changed.
- **Get spectators their tickets.** Spectators who want to enter before your check-in window go through the Spectators Desk with a ticket and ID.
- **Pack a layer.** The hall is air-conditioned, but it can be humid outside, so bring something dry to change into.

### FAQ

### How do I get to NRG Center from the airport?

From IAH, take METRO's 500 IAH Express downtown and switch to the Red Line south to Reliant Park station. From Hobby, a taxi or rideshare is simplest.
