## Race weekend guide (checked 2026-10-15)

HYROX Basel runs at Messe Basel in Kleinbasel, the city's right bank, a short walk from the Rhine and the old town. The timing is special: the race ends on Sunday 14 February, and Basel's Fasnacht, Switzerland's biggest carnival, kicks off at 4:00 the next morning. Stay one more night if you can, and book your room early.

### Race weekend at a glance

- **Dates:** Friday 12 February to Sunday 14 February 2027
- **Venue:** Messe Basel
- **Address:** Messe Basel, Messeplatz 10, 4005 Basel, Switzerland
- **Nearest public transport:** Messeplatz tram stop (lines 1, 2, 6, 14 and 15), right in front of the venue. Basel Badischer Bahnhof is about 5 minutes away on foot.
- **Divisions:** HYROX Men and Women, Adaptive Men and Women, Pro Men and Women, Doubles (Men, Women, Mixed), Pro Doubles (Men, Women) and Relays (Men's, Women's, Mixed)

### Getting to the venue

**From EuroAirport (Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg):** Leave through the Swiss sector and take bus 50 from the arrivals forecourt to Basel SBB. It runs every 7 to 10 minutes and takes about 20 minutes. From Basel SBB, ride the tram to Messeplatz. A taxi from the Swiss side takes about 15 minutes.

**From Basel SBB (main station):** Tram line 2 runs to Messeplatz in about 10 minutes. On foot, the walk takes around 25 minutes through the old town and across the Rhine.

**From Basel Badischer Bahnhof:** If you arrive on a German train, this station is about 5 minutes' walk from Messeplatz, or 2 minutes by tram.

### Where to stay

Kleinbasel, around the Messe and Claraplatz, keeps you within walking distance of the hall, the Rhine and the Lange Erlen park. Grossbasel's old town is a 10-minute tram ride away and has the best restaurants and sights. Fasnacht starts the morning after the race, so rooms fill up fast and prices climb.

- **Basel Marriott Hotel:** Directly next to the venue, so you can walk to check-in in minutes.
- **Hyperion Hotel Basel:** Messe Basel lists it within walking distance of the halls.
- **Dorint Hotel Basel:** Messe Basel lists it as an easy walk to the venue.
- **Pullman Basel Europe:** Another Messe-recommended hotel within walking distance, close to the shops of Clarastrasse.

### Gyms for pre-race training

- **LB Fitness Am Claraplatz (Kleinbasel):** A gym on Rebgasse, a few minutes' walk from the venue. It has a turf area for sleds and sprints, a rig and a sauna, plus HYROX classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. It offers a free trial, but a day pass isn't confirmed.
- **EVO Fitness Basel Steinenvorstadt (Grossbasel):** A gym in the old town, open daily from 6:00 to 23:00 with HYROX coaches. Day-pass availability isn't confirmed.
- **Forum Fitness (St. Johann):** A 1,800 m² gym on four floors with a functional zone, sauna and a free trial session. It shows HYROX as a partner, but HYROX kit and day passes aren't confirmed.

### Where locals run

- **Lange Erlen (Kleinbasel):** A riverside forest park along the Wiese that runs from the city edge to Riehen, popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. The paths are flat and mostly unpaved, and it's a short jog north-east of the venue past Badischer Bahnhof.
- **Rhine riverbank (Kleinbasel):** Run down to the water from the Messe and loop the river over two of the old-town bridges, such as the Mittlere Brücke and the Wettsteinbrücke. It's flat and paved, with the Minster above you on the far bank.

### Where to eat and fuel up

- **Restaurant Gifthüttli (Altstadt):** An old-town classic on Schneidergasse, open daily including Sundays. It's known for Cordon bleu in 12 versions, many available gluten-free, which makes a hearty post-race meal.
- **Markthalle Basel (Grossbasel):** A food hall near Basel SBB with dozens of stalls. Si Chef's fresh pasta makes a good pre-race dinner, and Zmorgeland serves organic brunch from 9:00, even on Sundays.
- **Volkshaus Basel (Kleinbasel):** A well-known brasserie on Rebgasse, a short walk from the venue, with lunch menus on weekdays.
- **Läckerli Huus Greifengasse (Kleinbasel):** Basel's spiced honey biscuits are a handy carb snack for the warm-up bag. This branch is near the Mittlere Brücke, and the Basel SBB shop is the one open on Sundays.

### Race weekend events and parties

As of 15 October 2026, no official HYROX after-party, expo or community run had been announced. HYROX lists an Entertainment Zone with partners at the venue and Race for Impact charity places. The big confirmed event that weekend isn't HYROX: Basel Fasnacht starts with the Morgestraich at 4:00 on Monday 15 February 2027. Check HYROX's official channels for updates.

### After the race

**Recovery:**

- **Sauna am Rhy (Breite):** A wood-fired sauna at the Rheinbad Breite with a view of the river and a Rhine or cold-tub plunge. The winter season opens on 17 October 2026, and last season ran until late March.

**Things to do:**

- Cross the river on one of Basel's four **Rhine ferries**, which are pulled across by the current on a cable with no engine.
- Climb up to **Basel Minster**, built between 1019 and about 1500, for views over the Rhine.
- Spend an afternoon at the **Kunstmuseum Basel**, Switzerland's largest art museum.
- If you stay Sunday night, watch the **Morgestraich** at 4:00 on Monday, when the old town turns off its lights and the cliques march with lanterns.

### Local insights

- **Your hotel gives you free transit:** Hotels in Basel city give overnight guests a BaselCard that works as a transit ticket for your whole stay in zones 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15. Some hotels mark your booking confirmation as a "Mobility-Ticket" so it counts as a provisional ticket for the ride in from the airport, so ask yours before you travel.
- **Exit the airport on the Swiss side:** EuroAirport is on French soil with separate Swiss and French sectors. Bus 50 to Basel leaves from the Swiss sector, while the French side serves bus 11 to Saint-Louis.
- **Morgestraich is the real deal:** At 4:00 on the Monday after the race, Basel switches off its old-town streetlights and the Fasnacht cliques march by lantern light for 72 hours. Expect very full hotels from Sunday night.
- **Eat Mehlsuppe like a local:** Basler Mehlsuppe, a soup thickened with browned flour and served with grated Sbrinz, is what Baslers eat after the Morgestraich with onion tart. It's warming, salty and easy on the stomach after a hard effort.
- **Sundays are quiet:** Swiss labor law mostly keeps shops closed on Sundays, except at major train stations and airports. Shop on Saturday, or use the stores at Basel SBB.
- **Expect cold, damp mornings:** February in Basel averages around 8°C (46°F) by day and 1°C (34°F) at night, so pack layers for your shakeout.
- **Ride-hail is available:** Uber runs in Basel 24/7, and the city has several taxi companies that serve the airport's Swiss sector.

### Race-day tips for this venue

- **Take the tram to Messeplatz.** Lines 1, 2, 6, 14 and 15 all stop right in front of the venue.
- **Bring physical ID.** HYROX requires a physical ID at check-in, and photos or digital copies aren't accepted.
- **Check in only on your race day.** You can't check in for someone else, and you need your wristbands, timing chip and bib to race.
- **Check your start time a few days before.** HYROX publishes individual start times about three days before the event, and changes aren't allowed.
- **Sort spectator tickets early.** Friends need spectator tickets, including for weekday age-group ceremonies.
- **Plan around Monday morning.** If you fly out on 15 February, leave extra time, because Fasnacht starts at 4:00 and the old town fills with people.
