## Race weekend guide (checked 2026-10-15)

HYROX Bilbao is a two-day February race at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Barakaldo, built where the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya steelworks once stood. Ansio metro station sits by the main entrance, so you can stay among central Bilbao's pintxo bars and ride straight to your start. Take a Line 2 train, and pack for damp Basque winter weather.

### Race weekend at a glance

- **Dates:** Saturday 6 to Sunday 7 February 2027
- **Venue:** Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC)
- **Address:** Azkue Kalea, 1, 48902 San Vicente de Barakaldo, Bizkaia
- **Nearest public transport:** Ansio station on Metro Bilbao Line 2, next to the BEC main entrance (use the BEC exit)
- **Divisions:** HYROX Men and Women, Pro Men and Pro Women, Doubles (Men, Women and Mixed), Pro Doubles (Men and Women), and Relays (Men, Women and Mixed)
- **Also on site:** The Thunderdome viewing area and the HYROX Entertainment Zone

### Getting to the venue

**From Bilbao Airport:** Bizkaibus A3247 leaves the arrivals level every 15 minutes (06:10–23:40) for Alameda Recalde, Plaza Elíptica, Gran Vía and Termibus. Tap a bank card for the €4.50 fare, then take a Line 2 metro to Ansio. A taxi to central Bilbao costs about €25–30.

**From central Bilbao:** Board a Line 2 train at Abando, Eliptikoa or San Mamés and get off at Ansio, roughly 10 minutes out.

**By car:** The BEC has an underground car park with about 4,000 spaces.

### Where to stay

Stay in Barakaldo for an early wave. Otherwise, base yourself in Abando around Plaza Elíptica, with the airport bus and metro, or near the Guggenheim for riverside running and dinners.

- **Hotel Puerta de Bilbao (Barakaldo):** About a 10-minute walk from the BEC, with a buffet breakfast including hot dishes cooked to order.
- **ibis budget Bilbao Barakaldo (Barakaldo):** A budget option about 2 km from the BEC, with free parking. Reception is at the nearby ibis.
- **Hotel Carlton (Abando):** A five-star landmark on Plaza Elíptica, above Eliptikoa metro station and next to an airport bus stop.
- **Hotel Miró (Abando):** Directly across from the Guggenheim, with a strength and conditioning gym and the Acqua Wellness area.

### Gyms for pre-race training

- **Dreamfit Barakaldo (Barakaldo):** In the Los Fueros shopping center, with a functional training zone, free weights and HYROX classes. Dreamfit sells a €15 one-off pass, but the Barakaldo page doesn't mention it, so email the club first.
- **Basic-Fit Bilbao Barakaldo Mercado Municipal (Barakaldo):** Free weights, cardio and a functional zone, open daily. Premium and Ultimate members from elsewhere in Europe can train here. Day-pass terms aren't confirmed, and no sled or SkiErg is listed.

### Where locals run

- **Bilbao estuary loop (Abando):** Start at Parque República de Abando and run both banks of the Nervión to the Puente de San Antón and back, about 8 km on a flat riverside promenade. For about 13 km, cross the Euskalduna bridge and run out to Zorrotza and back.
- **Etxebarria Park (Begoña):** Bilbao's largest park, on a hillside above the old town around a preserved foundry chimney. Good for a short hilly shakeout. Climb the stairs from Plaza Unamuno or use the Begoña exit of Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo metro.
- **Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park (Indautxu):** A central English-style garden with a duck pond, fine for a few easy laps.

### Where to eat and fuel up

- **Café Iruña (Abando):** On the Jardines de Albia since 1903 and open daily, Sunday included, for breakfast, pintxos and a €23.80 weekday set menu.
- **La Viña del Ensanche (Abando):** Open since 1927 and good for a Saturday dinner; closed Sundays and Mondays.
- **Café Bilbao (Casco Viejo):** A 1911 pintxo bar on Plaza Nueva. Keep it to a few pintxos the night before you race.
- **Mercado de la Ribera (Casco Viejo):** A huge covered market, open every morning except Sunday. Shop here Saturday for snacks and recovery food.

### Race weekend events and parties

The only confirmed extras are the Thunderdome and the Entertainment Zone. As of 15 October 2026, no official after-party, expo or community run had been announced, and early registration details were still to be confirmed. Watch HYROX's official channels.

### After the race

**Recovery:**

- **Dreamfit Barakaldo spa (Barakaldo):** The club's spa has a sauna and a Turkish bath. Ask whether the one-off pass covers it.
- **Acqua Wellness at Hotel Miró (Abando):** Massages and private wellness sessions; ask whether non-guests can book.

**Things to do:**

- See the **Guggenheim Museum Bilbao**, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00, and closed Mondays.
- Wander the **Casco Viejo** and Plaza Nueva's Sunday-morning book and coin market.
- Ride the **Artxanda Funicular** for city views; it's much cheaper with a Barik card.
- Cross the UNESCO-listed **Vizcaya Bridge** to Portugalete; ride Line 1 to Areeta.

### Local insights

- **Get a Barik card:** It costs €3, tops up in €5 steps, works on the metro, buses, tram and funicular, and up to ten people can share one. Tap in and out on the metro. The airport bus takes your bank card instead, with no tap-out.
- **Line 1 or Line 2:** Both share one trunk through Bilbao and split after San Ignazio. For the BEC, board Line 2 toward Kabiezes, not Line 1 toward Plentzia.
- **Moyua is now Eliptikoa:** The station under Plaza Elíptica used to be Moyua, and older maps still say so.
- **February weather:** Expect highs of about 14°C (57°F), lows near 5°C (41°F), rain on about 11 days and only around 96 hours of sunshine in the month.
- **Sunday is quiet:** Most shops close on Sundays, as do La Viña and the Ribera market. Stock up on Saturday.
- **Eat on local time:** Lunch starts around 13:30–14:30 and dinner from 20:30. Kitchens often close in between, but a bar will usually make you a bocadillo (sandwich).
- **Carb up the Basque way:** Marmitako is a tuna, potato and pepper stew that Basque fishermen cooked on board. It makes a good pre-race meal.
- **Tips, water and taxis:** Tipping isn't expected in simple places, and tap water is safe to drink; ask for "agua del grifo." One number, +34 944 448 888, reaches every Bilbao taxi company.

### Race-day tips for this venue

- **Ride to Ansio and use the BEC exit.** It brings you out right by the main entrance.
- **Check in on time.** Registration opens 90 minutes before your division's first wave and closes an hour before your start. Bring ID and your ticket QR code.
- **Pack one bag.** Bag drop takes a single bag per athlete, after check-in.
