## Race weekend guide (checked 2026-10-15)

BYD HYROX Melbourne runs for five days at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in South Wharf, on the Yarra River at the edge of the CBD. It's one of the most walkable venues on the circuit, with hotels next door, trams at the door and Melbourne's cafe scene a short stroll away. December is early summer, so expect changeable weather and plan for both warm afternoons and cool evenings.

### Race weekend at a glance

- **Dates:** Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December 2026
- **Venue:** Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC)
- **Address:** 1 Convention Centre Place, South Wharf VIC 3006, Australia
- **Nearest public transport:** Tram stop 124A Casino/MCEC/Clarendon Street (routes 12, 96 and 109), and Southern Cross station, about 15 minutes' walk away
- **Divisions:** Open and Pro singles; Men's and Women's Adaptive; Open Doubles (Men, Women and Mixed); Men's and Women's Pro Doubles; and Men's, Women's and Mixed Relay
- **Schedule:** The last wave is expected to start around 8:00 PM each day. HYROX hasn't yet confirmed check-in times or locations.

### Getting to the venue

**From the airport:** SkyBus runs from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross station, and Pan Pacific Melbourne says the trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes. From Southern Cross, take tram 12, 96 or 109 a few stops to the Casino/MCEC/Clarendon Street stop, or walk about 15 minutes. Taxi ranks and a rideshare drop-off point are outside the Convention Centre entrance.

**From the city center:** Trams 12, 96 and 109 run from the CBD to the stop at the venue's Clarendon Street entrance. From Flinders Street station, you can walk toward the river and cross the Seafarers Bridge to reach the venue.

### Where to stay

Most athletes stay in one of three areas. **South Wharf** is right at the venue. **Southbank** is a short riverside walk away. The **western CBD**, around Southern Cross, gives you easy access to SkyBus and the trams.

- **Pan Pacific Melbourne:** It has a direct connection to the MCEC, so it's the closest bed to the start line.
- **Novotel Melbourne South Wharf:** It sits right next to the MCEC and is linked to the center.
- **Crown Promenade Melbourne:** It's on Whiteman Street in Southbank, a few minutes' walk from the MCEC.
- **Hyatt Centric Melbourne:** It's on Downie Street in the CBD, with easy access to Southern Cross station and the MCEC.

### Gyms for pre-race training

- **Virgin Active Collins Street (CBD):** Virgin Active is an Official HYROX Training Club Partner that runs HYROX classes in Australia. The Collins Street club, which also has a pool and sauna, is the Melbourne club named on its HYROX page. A free trial workout is offered.
- **F45 Training Southbank:** F45 is HYROX's official global training partner and runs co-developed HYROX programs at selected studios. Check with the Southbank studio about its current HYROX sessions.
- **United Training Grounds (South Melbourne):** It's a strength and conditioning gym on Yarra Place that offers HYROX training programs, across the lane from ST. ALi.

None of these gyms list a casual day pass for HYROX classes, so contact them before you visit.

### Where locals run

- **The Tan (South Yarra):** Melbourne's classic jogging loop runs 3.8 km around the outside fence of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Most of it is fine gravel, with a paved stretch on Anderson Street. It's just across the Yarra from the CBD.
- **Albert Park Lake (Albert Park):** Parks Victoria's 5 km walking and running track circles the lake, south of the venue. It's flat, so it's good for an easy shakeout.

### Where to eat and fuel up

- **ST. ALi (South Melbourne):** It's a warehouse cafe and coffee roaster on Yarra Place, a classic Melbourne breakfast stop.
- **Higher Ground (CBD):** It's a big all-day cafe on Little Bourke Street near Southern Cross, known for its ricotta hotcakes.
- **South Melbourne Market:** It's a food market with plenty of stalls for stocking up a hotel fridge. It trades on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

### Race weekend events and parties

As of 15 October 2026, no official after-party, expo or community run had been announced for BYD HYROX Melbourne. Ceremony times are listed as TBA, and the event page mentions a HYROX Race Crew volunteer program and charity entries through Race for Impact. Check HYROX's official channels, local run clubs and HYROX training gyms closer to the date for shakeout runs or brand events.

### After the race

**Recovery:**
- **Sense of Self (Collingwood):** It's a warehouse bathhouse with a mineral bath, Finnish sauna, cold plunge and steam room.
- **Soak Bathhouse (South Yarra):** It has mineral pools, a cedarwood sauna, a steam room and a cold plunge.
- **Virgin Active Collins Street:** The club has a pool and sauna, if you have access.

**Things to do:**
- Shake out your legs with an easy lap of the **Tan Track** around the Royal Botanic Gardens.
- Run or walk the flat loop at **Albert Park Lake**.
- Stroll the **St Kilda** foreshore by the bay.
- Graze your way around **South Melbourne Market**.

### Local insights

- **Trains tap, trams don't (yet):** Since June 2026, you can tap a bank card, phone or smartwatch on Melbourne's metro trains. When that rollout was announced, trams and buses were still myki-only, so buy a myki if you'll ride the tram to the venue.
- **Free Tram Zone:** Trams are free inside the marked zone covering the CBD and Docklands, so don't tap on there. Outside it, tap your myki on and off. A daily fare cap limits what you'll spend.
- **Tipping is optional:** No one expects a tip. If service is great, about 10% or rounding up is plenty.
- **Card fees in cabs:** Taxis often add a card fee of about 2 to 5%.
- **Rideshare:** Uber is the most widely used app, and DiDi is a cheaper alternative. Both use marked pickup zones at the airport.
- **Respect the sun:** SunSmart advises covering up whenever the UV index is 3 or above. Check the free SunSmart Global UV app before an outdoor shakeout.

### Race-day tips for this venue

- **Bring ID.** You must show it at check-in, and you can't check in for anyone else.
- **Your wristband only works on your own race day.** On any other day, you'll need a spectator ticket to enter.
- **Spectators need their own tickets,** sold separately through the event page.
- **Expect late waves.** The last wave is expected around 8:00 PM, so plan your meals and transport for an evening start if that's your slot.
- **Plan for changeable weather.** Melbourne's average December maximum is about 24°C (75°F), but conditions can swing quickly. Pack a layer for the walk home.
- **Check bag drop details.** The event page doesn't cover bag drop yet, so read the athlete information HYROX publishes before race week.
