## Race weekend guide (checked 2026-10-15)

HYROX Ottawa brings five days of racing to Canada's capital in late April, just as the city comes out of winter. It's a compact, bilingual city where you can run along a UNESCO-listed canal, eat a BeaverTail in the ByWard Market and cross into Quebec for a Nordic spa in the same weekend. The one thing to know is that, as of 15 October 2026, HYROX hadn't announced the venue, so wait for confirmation before booking a hotel based on location.

### Race weekend at a glance

- **Dates:** Wednesday 21 April to Sunday 25 April 2027
- **Venue:** Venue to be confirmed
- **Address:** To be confirmed. The official event page says "Venue information coming soon."
- **Nearest public transport:** To be confirmed once the venue is announced
- **Divisions:** The race schedule hadn't been published as of 15 October 2026. The event page confirms age-group divisions with ceremonies after each one.
- **Also on site:** The HYROX Entertainment Zone with partners and the Thunderdome viewing area

### Getting to the venue

**From Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW):** The O-Train Line 4 airport link, which opened in January 2025, leaves from the terminal's departures level. Ride it two stops to South Keys and switch to Line 2 in the fare-paid zone. For downtown, take Line 2 north to Bayview and change to Line 1 (Confederation Line).

**From downtown:** Line 1 runs east-west through downtown, and Line 2 runs north-south from Bayview, every 12 minutes. Once the venue is announced, check the OC Transpo trip planner for the best route.

### Where to stay

Until the venue is confirmed, downtown is the safest base. The area around Parliament Hill and Elgin Street is close to Line 1 and the canal paths. The ByWard Market has the most restaurants and nightlife, a few minutes' walk east.

- **Fairmont Château Laurier:** The landmark hotel at 1 Rideau Street, between the ByWard Market and the Rideau Canal locks, with an art deco indoor pool and access to a health club.
- **The Lord Elgin Hotel:** At 100 Elgin Street, steps from Parliament Hill and the canal., which has been a hotel for more than 85 years.
- **Alt Hotel Ottawa Downtown:** A 148-room hotel in the downtown business district with a gym open day and night.
- **Arc The Hotel:** A downtown hotel with a fitness center open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

### Gyms for pre-race training

- **CrossFit 1855 (West End):** On Laperrière Avenue, west of downtown. It's listed as an official HYROX affiliate with dedicated HYROX classes, and drop-ins are available.
- **OCR Academy (West Ottawa):** On Morrison Drive, listed as an official HYROX affiliate with coached HYROX-focused sessions. Ask about visitor passes.
- **MOVATI Athletic Nepean (Nepean):** On Meadowlands Drive East, listed as an official HYROX Training Club with certified HYROX coaches. Day-pass availability isn't confirmed.
- **MOVATI Athletic Barrhaven (Barrhaven):** On Crestway Drive in the southwest, also listed as an official HYROX Training Club.

### Where locals run

- **Rideau Canal Pathway (Centretown):** Paths run along both sides of the canal from the Ottawa River locks, next to the Château Laurier, to Hog's Back Falls. They're mostly flat and paved. Run out on one bank and back on the other, using Dow's Lake as a natural turnaround.
- **Ottawa River Pathway (Downtown):** Part of the 220 km Capital Pathway network, following the south bank of the Ottawa River through downtown. Most of it is paved.
- **Dow's Lake (Dow's Lake):** A small lake on the canal at the south end of Preston Street, with Queen Elizabeth Driveway along one shore and Colonel By Drive along the other. Dows Lake O-Train station on Line 2 is about 300 m away.

### Where to eat and fuel up

- **BeaverTails (ByWard Market):** The fried-dough pastry chain opened its first stand in the ByWard Market around 1980. It's a sugary post-race treat rather than race fuel, but it's an Ottawa rite.
- **Zak's Diner (ByWard Market):** At 14 ByWard Market Square, serving all-day breakfast. It's open 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays, handy for an early or late meal. There's also a branch on Elgin Street.
- **Shawarma Palace (Downtown):** Its newest downtown location is in CF Rideau Centre. A mixed platter with rice, potatoes, hummus and garlic sauce is a proper post-race refuel.
- **Dow's Lake Pavilion (Dow's Lake):** Restaurants overlooking the canal, including Lago and Mexi's. Handy after a run around the lake.

### Race weekend events and parties

The confirmed extras are the HYROX Entertainment Zone with partners, the Thunderdome viewing area, and age-group ceremonies after each division. As of 15 October 2026, no official after-party, expo or community run had been announced, and the venue itself hadn't been confirmed. Watch HYROX's official channels and Ottawa run clubs closer to the date.

### After the race

**Recovery:**

- **Nordik Spa-Nature (Chelsea, Quebec):** A Nordic spa village across the river in Quebec, with thermal baths, saunas with Aufguss rituals and the underground saltwater Källa bath. Book ahead.
- **Fairmont Château Laurier (Downtown):** Hotel guests can swim in the art deco indoor pool.

**Things to do:**

- Walk up to **Parliament Hill** and along the river below it.
- Browse the stalls and food shops of the **ByWard Market**.
- See the locks where the **Rideau Canal** meets the Ottawa River, beside the Château Laurier.
- Spend an afternoon at one of the **national museums** in the capital.

### Local insights

- **Take the train from the terminal:** O-Train Line 4 runs from the airport's departures level to South Keys, with an easy cross-platform transfer to Line 2. It's a cheap alternative to a taxi if you're staying near the rail lines.
- **Tap your card:** OC Transpo's O-Payment accepts contactless credit cards, debit cards and phone wallets at the adult fare ($4.00 as of 2025) and caps your spending at the day and monthly pass prices. Transfers are free for 90 to 105 minutes.
- **Pack for winter and spring:** Late April averages about 11°C (52°F) by day and close to freezing at night, around 1°C (33°F). Expect rain on about 11 days of the month and the odd snowy day, so bring a warm layer and gloves for early starts.
- **Add 13% at the till:** Ontario's harmonized sales tax is 13%, and it's added on top of most listed prices.
- **Cross into Quebec:** Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River, and Nordik is in nearby Chelsea, Quebec. Expect more French on signs and menus once you cross.
- **The canal is for running, not skating:** The famous 7.8 km Rideau Canal Skateway is a winter-only attraction. By late April, the paths beside the canal are for runners and cyclists.
- **Eat shawarma like a local:** Shawarma Palace even names its combos after the Ottawa Redblacks and Senators, so you know it's woven into the local sports scene.

### Race-day tips for this venue

- **Wait for the venue before you book.** HYROX had not announced the location as of 15 October 2026. Check the official site before choosing a hotel or transport plan.
- **Bring ID to check in.** Nobody can check in for you, and registration opens 90 minutes before your division's first start wave.
- **Check your start time three days out.** Individual start times are linked about three days before the race.
- **Get spectators their tickets.** Spectators who want to enter before your check-in window go through the Spectators Desk with a ticket and ID.
- **Dress for a cold morning.** April nights in Ottawa are often near freezing, so wear a warm layer to the venue and pack dry clothes for afterward.
