## Race weekend guide (checked 2026-10-15)

Virgin Active HYROX Johannesburg closes the 2026 calendar with four days of racing at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec. The May 2026 edition drew more than 8,100 athletes, the biggest HYROX field yet on the continent. The one thing to know: Johannesburg sits at about 1,753 m, so your 8 km of running will feel harder than at sea level.

### Race weekend at a glance

- **Dates:** Thursday 26 November to Sunday 29 November 2026
- **Venue:** Johannesburg Expo Centre
- **Address:** Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec Road, Corner Rand Show Road, Johannesburg, 2091, South Africa
- **Nearest public transport:** No rail or bus link to the venue is published, so plan on Uber, Bolt or a car.
- **Divisions:** Open (singles), Pro (singles), Doubles, Pro Doubles, Relay, Corporate relays, the Virgin Active Relay and Adaptive. All relays run on Friday evening, 27 November.

### Getting to the venue

**From O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB):** The Expo Centre says it is about 30 minutes from the major airports by road. Book Uber or Bolt in the app or arrange a hotel transfer. UK travel advice warns of robberies of travelers followed from the airport, so stick to main roads.

**From Sandton or Rosebank:** The Gautrain runs from O.R. Tambo to Sandton in about 15 minutes, with connections to Rosebank. From there, Uber or Bolt to Nasrec takes about 20–22 minutes, according to the venue.

**By car:** The venue has more than 20,000 parking bays. HYROX hasn't published race parking details yet.

### Where to stay

Southgate and Gold Reef City are the closest hotel areas, each about 10 minutes' drive or less from Nasrec. Rosebank and Sandton are 20–25 minutes away but put you near the Gautrain, parks for shakeout runs, and the best restaurants.

- **Road Lodge Hotel Southgate:** The closest hotel on the venue's own list, about 3.5 km or a 7-minute drive away, a simple budget base for an early wave.
- **Sun1 Southgate:** Another no-frills option about 4.8 km from the Expo Centre, roughly 10 minutes by car.
- **Southern Sun Gold Reef City Hotel:** About 5.8 km or 9 minutes from Nasrec, with the Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City on your doorstep.
- **Southern Sun Rosebank Hotel:** About 22 minutes' drive from the venue, close to Zoo Lake and the Keyes Art Mile restaurants.
- **Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton:** About 20 minutes' drive from the venue, in Sandton at the end of the Gautrain airport line.

### Gyms for pre-race training

- **Virgin Active Rosebank (Rosebank):** Virgin Active says all its South African clubs are official HYROX affiliate partners, and Rosebank lists HYROX classes on its timetable. Day-pass availability isn't confirmed, so ask the club about a guest pass.
- **Virgin Active Melrose Arch (Melrose Arch):** Its timetable includes GRID HYROX classes; guest access isn't confirmed.
- **Virgin Active Randburg (Randburg):** Runs Strength & Conditioning HYROX classes; check guest access first.
- **Virgin Active Roodepoort (Roodepoort):** Its timetable lists HYROX classes and a HYROX Sim session; day-pass availability isn't confirmed.

### Where locals run

- **Zoo Lake (Parkview):** A shady 1 km cement loop around the lake, close to the Rosebank hotels. Extend through Parkview for an 8 km out-and-back including the Westcliff Stairs.
- **Emmarentia Dam and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens (Emmarentia):** A loop of about 3.5 km on brick and paved paths around the gardens and dam. Entry is free.
- **Delta Park (Victory Park):** A 5 km loop around the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary and dams. The free Delta Park parkrun starts every Saturday at 8:00.

### Where to eat and fuel up

- **Sakhumzi (Soweto):** The famous restaurant on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, known for its buffet of pap, chakalaka, stews and grilled chicken. A proper post-race refuel.
- **Freshly Ground (Rosebank):** A relaxed spot on the Keyes Art Mile serving breakfast, pasta and grilled meat; good for a pre-race meal.
- **Pantry by Marble (Rosebank):** A 24-hour grocery, pâtisserie, pizza and coffee store, handy before an early wave.
- **Marble (Rosebank):** David Higgs's rooftop restaurant cooks over live fire and is a 2026 Eat Out star nominee. Book it for a finish-line celebration.
- **Soul Souvlaki (Rosebank):** A casual Greek spot in a converted shipping container. Pita and grilled meat make an easy pre-race dinner.

### Race weekend events and parties

As of 15 October 2026, no official after-party, expo or community run had been announced for Virgin Active HYROX Johannesburg. Early registration and the relay briefing are still "TBC", so watch HYROX's channels and the Virgin Active app.

### After the race

**Recovery:**

- **Johannesburg Ice Bath (Northcliff):** Lists cryotherapy, infrared sauna and sauna sessions.
- **Africology Spa (Parkhurst):** A day spa in Parkhurst offering sauna and cryotherapy alongside massage treatments.

**Things to do:**

- Spend a morning at the **Apartheid Museum**, open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 and only a short drive from Nasrec.
- Walk **Vilakazi Street** in Soweto and visit **Mandela House** at number 8115, which is open daily, then eat at Sakhumzi.
- Browse the galleries and restaurants of the **Keyes Art Mile** in Rosebank.

### Local insights

- **Tap your bank card on the Gautrain:** The Gautrain accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard and Europay cards at the gates, so you don't need to buy a Gautrain Card for a short stay.
- **Use Uber or Bolt, and use them carefully:** UK travel advice recommends booking recognised e-hailing apps in the app, waiting somewhere safe, and checking the plate and driver. It also advises against walking to or from Gautrain stations after dark.
- **Respect the altitude:** At about 1,753 m above sea level, Johannesburg is high enough that the UK government lists altitude sickness as a risk there. Drink plenty and hold back on the first two runs.
- **Load-shedding is paused, not forgotten:** Eskom has gone more than 470 days without national load-shedding as of September 2026, but local "load reduction" still hits parts of Gauteng. Ask your hotel whether it has backup power.
- **Tap water is rated excellent:** Johannesburg's water scored "excellent" in the national Blue Drop audit. After a supply cut, run the tap until it runs clear, or boil it if you're unsure.
- **Tip 10–15% in restaurants:** South African Tourism calls 10–15% the accepted standard in restaurants and bars. Keep small change for petrol attendants and car guards.
- **Expect afternoon storms:** November averages highs of 25°C (77°F) and lows of 13°C (56°F), with about 10 rainy days. Thunderstorms often roll in in the afternoon, so plan runs for the morning.
- **Pap is the local carb load:** Maize porridge served with chakalaka or a stew is the everyday South African staple, an easy carb the night before.

### Race-day tips for this venue

- **Bring your ID and check yourself in.** You can only check in on your race day, starting 90 minutes before your division's first wave, and nobody can check in on your behalf.
- **Look for your start time three days out.** Individual start times go live about three days before the race, and you can't change them.
- **Use the Spectators Desk to get in early.** To enter before your check-in window, show your ticket and ID there.
- **Book a ride home in advance on relay night.** Friday's relays run until about 20:35, and the ceremony is at 22:15, so arrange your Uber or Bolt pick-up instead of waiting outside late.
- **Pace for thin air.** Start the first 1 km run slower than your sea-level pace and drink at every aid station.

### FAQ

### How do I get to the Johannesburg Expo Centre from O.R. Tambo airport?

The venue is about 30 minutes from the airport by road. Use Uber, Bolt or a hotel transfer, or take the Gautrain to Sandton in about 15 minutes and continue by e-hailing.

### Does the altitude affect HYROX Johannesburg?

Yes. Johannesburg sits at about 1,753 m, and the UK government lists altitude sickness as a risk there. Expect slower running splits than at sea level.

### Is Johannesburg safe for HYROX visitors?

Crime is a real concern, especially after dark. UK government advice is to use app-based rides, don't walk at night, keep valuables out of sight and take care at ATMs.

### Is there load-shedding in Johannesburg?

National load-shedding has been suspended since May 2025, according to Eskom's updates. Some areas of Gauteng still get local load reduction, so ask your hotel about backup power.
