Your weekend in Guangzhou, mapped

Hotels near the venue, gyms for a shakeout session, where to fuel up and where to recover.

Pazhou keeps you a walk from the hall, with the big business hotels. Zhujiang New Town, the business district across the river in Tianhe, has more nightlife. Liwan, the old west of the city, suits food lovers who don't mind a longer metro ride.

Local insights for Guangzhou

The things a friend who lives here would tell you before race weekend.

  • Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you land

Guangzhou pays by QR code. Register with your foreign number and link a Visa or Mastercard; some banks block this, so test at home. Payments over ¥200 carry a 3% fee. Carry some cash too.

  • Tap your bank card on the metro

Since October 2025, Guangzhou Metro has accepted contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards issued abroad. Use the gates with card logos and tap the same card in and out. Locals use Alipay or WeChat metro QR codes or a Yang Cheng Tong card, but your bank card is simplest.

  • Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked on local networks

Travel eSIMs that route data via Hong Kong or Singapore usually get around this, but some plans route locally, so check. Download every app before you arrive.

  • Use DiDi for rides

Install "DiDi - Greater China" at home. At the airport, walk to the pickup zone it shows, then order.

  • Use Amap or Apple Maps

Amap (Gaode) is the local favorite, and Apple Maps uses Chinese map data.

  • Don't drink the tap water

Locals boil it; hotels provide bottled water or a kettle.

  • Congee is the local pre-race meal

Light, salty congee or rice noodles is easy on the stomach before an early wave.

  • November is warm and dry

Average highs are about 25°C (77°F) and lows 17°C (62°F), with about six rainy days. Bring a light layer for mornings.

Getting to Poly World Trade Expo Center

  • From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

Take Metro Line 3 to Kecun, then Line 8 to Pazhou: about an hour and ¥7 to ¥8. One 2026 guide reports Airport South station closed for renovation, so check which station serves your terminal. A taxi is roughly ¥150 and 45 minutes or more.

  • From Guangzhou East Railway Station

Metro Line 11 runs to Pazhou without a change.

  • From Guangzhou South Railway Station

Take Line 2 to Changgang, then Line 8 to Pazhou.
