HYROX questions, answered
The questions athletes ask most, with a short answer. Each one links to the full guide for the detail and sources.
The basics
Do I have to run the whole 8 km?+
You have to cover the full distance, but you're allowed to walk. Many first-timers mix running and walking, especially in the later laps.
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →How fit do I need to be to enter?+
There's no entry standard for Open. If you can train regularly for a few months and are cleared for vigorous exercise, you can prepare to finish.
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →Can I scale the weights?+
Not within a division. The loads are fixed for each division. If the Open loads feel too heavy, Doubles or Relay can be a good way to start because the work is shared.
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →Is HYROX the same as CrossFit?+
No. HYROX is a race with a fixed format and fixed stations, and the goal is simply to finish as fast as you can. There are no surprise workouts and no technical lifts like snatches or muscle-ups.
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →Where can I find the official rules?+
Always check the official HYROX rulebook for the current season. Rules and standards can be updated between seasons.
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →Who started HYROX?+
Christian Toetzke, a mass-participation event organizer, and Moritz Fürste, a two-time Olympic field hockey champion, founded HYROX in Hamburg in 2017. The history guide(/guides/hyrox-history-and-growthwho-started-hyrox) has the full timeline.
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →How many people do HYROX?+
More than 1.4 million people raced in the 2025/26 season, across more than 100 events, and HYROX is aiming for over 2 million in 2026/27 (figures as of October 2026).
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →Is HYROX worth it?+
For most people who enjoy training, yes: a race date keeps you consistent, your time is comparable anywhere in the world, and the events are big and well run. It isn't cheap once you add travel, so a local race or a Doubles entry is the budget-friendly way in. We weigh it up honestly in is HYROX worth…
More in: What is HYROX? The format, divisions and how to start →What are the HYROX divisions?+
Open and Pro (solo, at two load levels), Doubles and Pro Doubles (two athletes sharing the stations and running together), Relay (four athletes, two legs each) and Adaptive. Every division races the same 8 km and the same eight stations in the same order.
More in: HYROX divisions explained →When should I move up from Open to Pro?+
When your Open race feels comfortable and you can handle the Pro sled pull, wall ball and kettlebell loads in training without long breaks. There's no entry requirement. ROXFIT's rule of thumb is consistently under about 65 minutes (men) or 75 minutes (women) in Open.
More in: HYROX divisions explained →What is the minimum age for HYROX?+
16 on race day for Singles, Doubles and Relay. Kids aged 8 to 15 can race HYROX Youngstars at selected events.
More in: HYROX divisions explained →Can I switch division after buying a ticket?+
No. For the 26/27 season, division changes aren't allowed and tickets can't be moved to another event, so choose carefully before you book. The Flex add-on, bought at checkout, still allows one name change. See HYROX rule changes for 2026/27(/guides/hyrox-rule-changes-2026-27).
More in: HYROX divisions explained →What is a good HYROX time for a beginner?+
For a first Open race, about 1:30 to 1:50 for men and 1:40 to 2:00 for women is a solid result, based on ROXFIT's benchmarks. Finishing well and pacing evenly matters more than the number. Most people take a big chunk off in their second race.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →How long does a HYROX race take on average?+
Most finishers take 1:15 to 1:45. Published datasets put the typical Open finish at roughly 1:28 for men and 1:36 for women, though some sources quote 1:35 and 1:38. There's no cut-off time.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →What is the average HYROX time by division?+
Approximate typical finishes are 1:28 for Men's Open, 1:36 for Women's Open, 1:21 for Men's Pro, 1:27 for Women's Pro, and 1:16 to 1:29 for the Doubles divisions, according to ROXFIT and Pyrox-based analyses. Pro averages are faster because Pro fields are mostly experienced athletes.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →Does age affect what a good HYROX time is?+
Yes, but gradually. Results are ranked in five-year age groups, and a rough rule of thumb from ROXFIT is to allow about 5 to 8 minutes per decade. Data from HYROX Data Lab suggests most of the age-related slowdown comes from running, not strength.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →Where do most people lose time in HYROX?+
Mostly in the later runs, the wall balls and the Roxzone. Typical athletes run their last laps 10 to 20% slower than their first, and beginners can spend 9 to 12 minutes or more in the Roxzone compared with 4 to 5 for elites.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →What are the average HYROX station times?+
HYROX Data Lab's averages across about 395,000 solo results are roughly 4:46 SkiErg, 3:15 sled push, 5:41 sled pull, 6:08 burpee broad jumps, 5:06 row, 2:22 farmers carry, 5:34 sandbag lunges and 7:28 wall balls. These mix divisions, so treat them as rough benchmarks.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →Which HYROX station is the hardest?+
Wall balls, for most people. They come last, take the longest on average and show the biggest gap between fast and slow athletes. Burpee broad jumps are usually second. Strong runners often find the sleds hardest.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →How do I find my HYROX results and splits?+
Go to the official results page via https://hyrox.com/ choose the season and event, filter by division and search your surname. You'll see your total, every run and station split, your Roxzone time and your overall and age-group rank. Penalties can be added for up to 48 hours after the event.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →What splits do I need for a sub-90 HYROX?+
HYROX Data Lab's target is about 45:00 of total running (around 5:38 per km), 36:00 across the eight stations and 9:00 in the Roxzone.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →What splits do I need for sub-75 or sub-60 HYROX?+
For sub-75, aim for roughly 37:45 running (about 4:43 per km), 30:45 on stations and 6:30 in the Roxzone. That's a midpoint estimate between published 1:10 and 1:20 targets. For sub-60, HYROX Data Lab's targets are 31:45 running (about 3:58 per km), 23:30 on stations and 4:30 in the Roxzone.
More in: What is a good HYROX time? Averages by division, age and station →What's the difference between HYROX and CrossFit?+
HYROX is a fixed indoor race of eight 1 km runs, each followed by one functional station, scored on total time. CrossFit is a training method built on varied workouts, and its competition, the CrossFit Open, releases three new workouts over three weeks and ranks you on placings. HYROX standardizes the whole race,…
More in: HYROX vs CrossFit (and a marathon) →Is HYROX harder than CrossFit?+
Neither is harder overall. CrossFit's Rx workouts demand more technical skill, such as muscle-ups and Olympic lifts. HYROX demands more running and sustained endurance, with typical Open finishes around an hour and a half.
More in: HYROX vs CrossFit (and a marathon) →Is HYROX harder than a marathon?+
For most people, a marathon is the bigger endurance test: 42.2 km of running versus HYROX's 8 km, and roughly three times as long to finish. HYROX is shorter but adds heavy strength work, so it challenges your legs, grip and pacing in different ways.
More in: HYROX vs CrossFit (and a marathon) →I'm a runner: how do I prepare for HYROX?+
Keep your running, then add two strength sessions a week focused on legs, practice every station with good technique, and do compromised running where you run straight after station work. Don't let strong running tempt you into a fast first kilometer.
More in: HYROX vs CrossFit (and a marathon) →I do CrossFit: will I be good at HYROX?+
Most CrossFitters do well on the stations thanks to their strength and wall ball experience. The usual weak spot is running, so add three runs a week, including intervals and runs straight off station work, and practice pacing a race that lasts over an hour.
More in: HYROX vs CrossFit (and a marathon) →Which should I choose, HYROX or CrossFit?+
Choose HYROX if you like running and a repeatable race you can measure progress against. Choose CrossFit if you want variety, skill development and class-based coaching. Many people do both.
More in: HYROX vs CrossFit (and a marathon) →How should women train for HYROX (including around the cycle)?+
Run about three times a week, lift twice and practice stations under fatigue, with extra pulling and grip work. Track your cycle for a few months and adjust single sessions on rough days rather than following a rigid phase-based plan. Research shows only trivial average changes across the cycle.
More in: HYROX for women →Can I do HYROX while pregnant or postpartum?+
HYROX's rulebook welcomes pregnant racers but leaves the decision to you and strongly recommends talking to a medical professional first. Contact HYROX in advance if you need modified weights or movements, and ask how a modified result would be ranked. After birth, return gradually, and get a pelvic health check…
More in: HYROX for women →What weights do women use in HYROX?+
Women's Open uses a 102 kg sled push, a 78 kg sled pull, 2 x 16 kg kettlebells, a 10 kg sandbag and a 4 kg wall ball to a 2.70 m target. Women's Pro uses 152 kg, 103 kg, 2 x 24 kg, 20 kg and a 6 kg wall ball, still to 2.70 m. The 8 km of running is the same for everyone.
More in: HYROX for women →What's the difference between Women's Open and Women's Pro?+
Pro uses the Men's Open loads and is the Worlds qualification route for age groups up to 59. Start in Open and move up once Pro loads feel like working weights.
More in: HYROX for women →What weights does the woman use in Mixed Doubles?+
Both partners use the Men's Open / Women Pro loads (152 kg, 103 kg, 2 x 24 kg, 20 kg, 6 kg ball), and the woman throws to the 2.70 m target.
More in: HYROX for women →Can I race HYROX on my period?+
Yes. Use products you've trained in and change just before the start area. If your periods are very heavy or painful, talk to your doctor before race day.
More in: HYROX for women →What are the HYROX age groups?+
Under the 26/27 rulebook, HYROX age groups are Under 24 (16–24), then five-year bands from 25–29 up to 85–89. Your group is set by your age on race day, and in Doubles by the average age of both partners. Weights and distances depend on your division, not your age group.
More in: HYROX over 40 and 50 →Can I do HYROX over 40 / over 50?+
Yes. There's no upper age limit, the age groups run to 85–89, and you're ranked against people your own age. If you're new to hard exercise or have a health condition, see your doctor first and give yourself a longer build-up, around 16 weeks or more.
More in: HYROX over 40 and 50 →How should masters athletes train for HYROX?+
Use the same mix as any HYROX plan (running, strength and station work) but keep hard sessions to about two a week with easier days in between, lift twice a week, add a lighter week every three or four weeks, and do short mobility sessions. Prioritize sleep and spread your protein across your meals.
More in: HYROX over 40 and 50 →Is HYROX safe if you're over 50?+
For most healthy people who build up gradually, yes. It's vigorous exercise, so get a medical check before you start if you're currently inactive, have a heart, metabolic or kidney condition, or notice symptoms like chest pain or dizziness during exercise. Practice every station before race day and start in Open.
More in: HYROX over 40 and 50 →Do older age groups use lighter weights in HYROX?+
No. Weights are set by division, not age. If you want lighter loads, choose Open over Pro, or race Doubles or Relay to share the work. At the World Championships, 60+ racers qualify through Open and race with Open weights.
More in: HYROX over 40 and 50 →Can over-60s race the Pro division?+
Yes, at regular races you can race Pro up to and including the 80+ age groups, with normal age group rankings and podiums. For World Championship qualification, though, athletes aged 60 and over qualify through the Open division only.
More in: HYROX over 40 and 50 →Is HYROX good for you?+
For most healthy adults, yes. It combines running and strength work, which is the mix WHO guidelines recommend, and a race date helps you stay consistent. The evidence comes mainly from exercise in general rather than HYROX-specific studies. Build up gradually and check with your doctor first if you have a medical…
More in: The benefits of HYROX →What are the benefits of HYROX?+
The main benefits are better cardiorespiratory fitness, more strength and muscle, help with fat loss, stronger bones, easier everyday movement, and better mood and sleep. Training for a race also keeps many people consistent, and Doubles, Relay and group classes add a social side. Most of these benefits come from…
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Is HYROX good for your heart?+
Yes, for most people. HYROX training raises cardiorespiratory fitness, which the American Heart Association calls a strong predictor of health and lifespan. Each step up in fitness is linked to lower heart disease risk. If you have a heart condition or symptoms, get medical clearance first.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Does HYROX build muscle?+
Some, especially for beginners, through the sleds, lunges, carries and wall balls. It isn't the fastest way to build size, so add two heavier lifting sessions a week if muscle is a goal. Research shows that combining running with lifting doesn't block strength or muscle gains.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Is HYROX bad for your knees and joints?+
Not for most people. Recreational runners had less hip and knee arthritis than sedentary people in a large meta-analysis, and loading helps bones get stronger. Knee and lower-leg overuse injuries are the most common HYROX problems, though, so increase your running and lunges gradually.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Is HYROX good for mental health?+
Exercise reliably improves symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, and higher-intensity training like HYROX seems to help more. It can also improve sleep. It's a support, not a replacement for professional help, so talk to a doctor or mental health professional if you're struggling.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →What are the risks of HYROX?+
Overuse injuries (mostly knees and lower legs), doing too much too soon, overtraining and burnout, and cost. Vigorous exercise briefly raises cardiac risk in people with underlying heart disease, especially if they're unused to it. Build volume slowly, take easy weeks, and get checked if you're inactive or have risk…
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Will HYROX training make everyday life easier?+
Probably. The stations mimic pushing, pulling, carrying, lunging and getting up off the floor, and grip strength is linked to lower mortality in large studies. Whether training grip lowers that risk hasn't been proven yet.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Does signing up for a HYROX race keep you training?+
For many people, yes. Goal-setting research shows a medium-sized boost to how much people exercise, and a race date makes the goal specific.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →Is the HYROX community a real benefit?+
Modestly. Group exercise showed small, mostly non-significant advantages over solo training in a 2026 meta-analysis, but it helps many people stay consistent.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →How often should I do HYROX training for health?+
About three sessions a week, plus some easy running, meets the WHO's recommendations of 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity and two strength days. More training mostly improves race performance, not health.
More in: The benefits of HYROX →When and where was the first HYROX race?+
The first race was held in Hamburg in 2017. Reports put attendance at about 600 to 700 athletes: Fortune says 618, and BarBend says 650. PUMA was involved from that first race.
More in: Who started HYROX, how big is it, and is it worth it? →How big is HYROX?+
As of October 2026, HYROX runs more than 100 events a season in over 30 countries on six continents, and it has about 13,000 affiliated gyms. That makes it one of the biggest mass-participation fitness events in the world.
More in: Who started HYROX, how big is it, and is it worth it? →Who owns HYROX?+
Since September 2026, a consortium led by private equity firm L Catterton, together with co-founders Christian Toetzke and Moritz Fürste and with WndrCo taking part, owns the majority stake previously held by Infront Sports & Media. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
More in: Who started HYROX, how big is it, and is it worth it? →Why is everyone doing HYROX?+
It's open to anyone with no qualification or time limit, the format is identical everywhere, the movements are simple, and you can race with friends in Doubles or Relay. Thousands of affiliated gyms also run HYROX classes, which pull members toward races.
More in: Who started HYROX, how big is it, and is it worth it? →Does signing up for a race keep you training?+
For many people, yes. Goal-setting research shows a medium-sized boost to how much people exercise, and a race gives you a specific goal with a fixed date. There's no HYROX-specific research on this yet, so the evidence comes from exercise in general.
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →Why is a race better than a goal like "get fit"?+
"Get fit" has no deadline or clear test, so skipping a session never feels costly. A race date lets you plan backward, set checkpoints and notice when you fall behind. For beginners, aim to finish rather than to hit a specific time.
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →How long does it take to make exercise a habit?+
It varies widely. One study of new gym members found that training at least four times a week for about six weeks was the minimum to build a habit, and a study of everyday habits found an average of about 66 days. A 12-week race build covers that window.
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →How far in advance should I book a HYROX race?+
About 12 to 16 weeks if you're new and already reasonably active. That gives you time to build up safely while keeping the date close enough to feel real. Pick a city you can get to, and book soon, because popular races can sell out.
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →What if I fall behind on training before my race?+
Don't cram. Sudden jumps in training load are a major injury risk. Keep building steadily, switch your goal to finishing comfortably, and use a "never miss twice" rule to get back on track.
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →How do I stay motivated after my HYROX race?+
Book your next goal within a week or two, such as a Doubles or Relay race, a faster time, or a race in a new city. Take an easy week first. Most interventions that boost exercise fade once they end, so having the next goal ready matters.
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →Is training for a race good for mental health?+
Exercise in general supports mood, and a goal can add structure and a sense of achievement (see HYROX and mental health(/guides/hyrox-mental-health)). A race isn't a treatment, though. If training starts to feel like pressure, drop the time target, and if you're struggling with your mental health, talk to a doctor or…
More in: Why signing up for a race keeps you training →Training
How can I improve my HYROX time?+
Start with your splits from your last race and fix the biggest leak first. For most intermediate athletes that means more easy and threshold running, regular compromised-running sessions, stronger sleds and wall balls, and faster Roxzone transitions. Retest every few weeks and change only one or two things at a time.
More in: 12-week HYROX training plan →How do I taper for HYROX?+
Taper over about two weeks. Cut training volume by around 30–40% in the second-to-last week and to about half in race week, but keep a little race-pace work and keep your usual number of sessions. Avoid anything new or anything that makes you sore.
More in: 12-week HYROX training plan →What should I do the day before a HYROX race?+
Rest. An optional 10–15 minute shakeout jog is fine, but then stay off your feet. Eat familiar meals with carbohydrate, drink normally, avoid heavy or unfamiliar food, pack your kit and go to bed at your usual time.
More in: 12-week HYROX training plan →Is there a HYROX training plan for intermediate athletes?+
Yes, this 12-week plan is built for athletes who have raced once or more and finish roughly between 1:15 and 1:35. It uses four or five sessions a week across three phases, with simulations in weeks 3, 7 and 10 and a two-week taper. If you're newer, start with the beginner plan(/guides/hyrox-training-plan-beginner).
More in: 12-week HYROX training plan →How long do I need to train for HYROX?+
If you already exercise regularly, 8–12 weeks of consistent training is enough to finish your first race well. Starting from scratch, build a base for a few months first. Chasing a competitive time usually takes several months of focused training.
More in: How to train for HYROX →How much running should I do per week for HYROX?+
Most people should run two to four times a week, with most of it easy. Beginners can start with about 60–120 minutes of running a week, building gradually. Running in your hybrid sessions counts toward the total.
More in: How to train for HYROX →Can I train for HYROX at home or without a sled?+
Yes. Running, strength, lunges, burpee broad jumps, carries and wall ball alternatives all work at home. Substitute the sled with plate pushes, step-ups and backward band walks, but try to get a few sessions on a real sled, SkiErg and rower before race day.
More in: How to train for HYROX →What is a HYROX simulation, and how do I use it as a benchmark?+
It's a rehearsal of the race in training: runs and stations in order at race weights. A half simulation covers four of each. Do one every few weeks at about 80–90% effort, record your splits and transitions, and repeat it later to measure progress.
More in: How to train for HYROX →What heart rate zones should I train in for HYROX?+
Do most of your training in the easy zone (zone 2), add one or two threshold sessions (zone 4) a week, and keep all-out efforts short. Max heart rate formulas are only estimates, so use the talk test and perceived effort alongside your watch.
More in: How to train for HYROX →What strength training do I need for HYROX? How strong do I have to be?+
One or two strength sessions a week covering squats, hinges, lunges, pulling, pressing and carries is enough for most people. There's no official lift standard. If you can move your division's sled and complete the carries and lunges at race weight without long stops, you're strong enough to finish.
More in: How to train for HYROX →Should I join a HYROX Training Club or class?+
It's worth it if you want coaching, access to sleds and ergs, and a group to train with. It isn't required. Use classes as your hybrid sessions, and keep your easy running easy around them.
More in: How to train for HYROX →Can I do HYROX if I'm not a runner?+
Yes. Many first-timers aren't runners and walk parts of the runs. Build up with run-walk intervals until you can run about 5 km continuously, then start a beginner plan. Doubles is a gentler first race option.
More in: How to train for HYROX →How much time can I take off in my second HYROX race?+
Many athletes find 5 to 15 minutes in their second race, mostly from better pacing and Roxzone discipline rather than new fitness. After that, gains come more slowly and depend on running volume and strength-endurance.
More in: How to improve your HYROX time (and when to move up to Pro) →Do I have to race Pro to qualify for the HYROX World Championships?+
For athletes under 60 racing singles, yes: age-group spots come from Pro singles, or from Mixed Doubles if you race with a partner. Athletes aged 60 and over qualify through Open and race Open weights at Worlds.
More in: How to improve your HYROX time (and when to move up to Pro) →How much slower is Pro than Open?+
ROXFIT estimates the same athlete is usually about 3 to 7 minutes slower in Pro because of the heavier sleds, kettlebells, sandbag and wall ball. Pro averages look faster than Open averages only because Pro fields are mostly experienced athletes.
More in: How to improve your HYROX time (and when to move up to Pro) →Does running for HYROX kill your gains?+
Not much, if you manage it. The largest recent meta-analysis (Schumann, 2022) found that adding aerobic training to strength training didn't reduce muscle growth or maximal strength, though explosive power was slightly lower. Interference is more likely if you're highly trained, run a lot and do heavy legs and hard…
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →What is the interference effect?+
It's the reduction in strength, power or muscle gains that can happen when you combine endurance and strength training. It was first described in a 1980 study with a very high training load. Modern reviews suggest the main cost is to explosive power and, in trained lifters, lower-body strength when both are done in…
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →Can you build muscle doing only HYROX classes?+
Beginners can, at least for the first several months. After that, classes mainly maintain muscle and improve conditioning, because the loads don't increase steadily and sets usually end from breathlessness rather than muscle fatigue. Add two progressive strength sessions a week if muscle is a goal.
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →How many strength sessions a week should I do for HYROX?+
Two or three for most people. Aim for about 10 hard sets per muscle group per week, mostly in the 6 to 12 rep range, and keep heavy leg days away from your hardest runs. Reduce the volume, but not the weight, in the last few weeks before a race.
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →How much protein do I need to build muscle while training for HYROX?+
About 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day suits most people, spread across three or four meals. Research found no further average gains in lean mass above that, though up to about 2.0 g/kg is reasonable. You also need enough total calories.
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →Will HYROX make me bulky?+
Very unlikely. Getting bulky takes heavy, high-volume lifting and a calorie surplus. HYROX training tends to make people leaner and more athletic, with stronger legs, back and grip.
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →Does more muscle make you faster at HYROX?+
Only up to a point. You need enough strength to move the sleds well, but in the one lab study of HYROX, VO2max, endurance training and lower body fat predicted finish time, while muscle mass didn't. For most people, fitness is the bigger limiter.
More in: Does HYROX build muscle? Strength, hypertrophy and the interference effect →Is HYROX functional fitness?+
Yes. Every HYROX station is a loaded version of an everyday movement: pushing, pulling, carrying, lunging, squatting and getting up off the floor, all done while your heart rate is high. Ordinary strength and cardio training is functional too, so HYROX is one good option rather than the only one.
More in: Functional fitness →Does HYROX training make everyday life easier?+
Most likely. Strength training reliably improves strength, getting out of a chair and walking speed in research, and HYROX trains those patterns under fatigue. There are no HYROX-specific studies yet, so this comes from strength and fitness research in general.
More in: Functional fitness →Why is grip strength a health marker?+
In large studies of hundreds of thousands of adults, each 5 kg lower grip strength was linked to roughly a 16% to 20% higher risk of early death. Grip reflects overall muscle strength and health. It hasn't been proven that training grip lowers that risk, but a stronger grip helps with daily tasks anyway.
More in: Functional fitness →Does HYROX help you get up off the floor?+
Yes. Burpees take you to the floor and back up dozens of times, and lunges build the leg strength to stand from kneeling. In a study of adults aged 51 to 80, people who could sit and rise from the floor more easily had lower mortality, though that's an association, not proof of cause.
More in: Functional fitness →Is HYROX good for ageing well?+
It covers two of the three things guidelines recommend for older adults: aerobic fitness and muscle strength. Add balance work, because the WHO advises multicomponent balance and strength training for people 65 and over, and combined programs reduce falls the most. Get medical advice first if you have a health…
More in: Functional fitness →What does HYROX not train?+
Balance, mobility, rotation, sideways movement and maximal strength get little attention. Add single-leg and balance drills, a few minutes of mobility, suitcase carries and one or two heavier lifting sessions a week if you want well-rounded function.
More in: Functional fitness →How do I add functional training to a HYROX plan?+
Keep your usual sessions and add carries twice a week, floor-to-standing practice in warm-ups, single-leg strength and balance drills, dead hangs for grip, and short mobility work. Add these gradually to avoid a sudden jump in training load.
More in: Functional fitness →Stations and technique
Why is the sled push so much harder at the race than in the gym?+
The race sleds run on a thin carpet over concrete, which grips more than most gym turf, and you arrive tired. Training around 10–15% above race weight helps close the gap.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →How do I push the sled at HYROX?+
Get low with a flat back, torso around 45 degrees, arms either locked out or bent. Drive with short, quick steps through the balls of your feet so your legs do the work. Keep the sled moving, because restarting it costs more than pushing slowly.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →What's the best body position for the sled push?+
Hips and knees bent, spine neutral, eyes just ahead of the sled. Hands lower on the poles give a lower angle on a sticky sled; locked-out arms keep you more upright and breathing easier.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →Should I push the sled unbroken or take breaks?+
Only go unbroken if you've done it at race weight in training. Otherwise use the three turns between lanes as your planned breathers, and if you must stop mid-lane, keep your hands on the poles and restart within a few seconds.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →How do I do the sled pull at HYROX?+
Stand in your Racers Box, take the slack out of the rope, and pull hand over hand until the sled fully crosses the line. Walk to the other end and repeat, four lanes in total, standing the whole time.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →Is hand over hand or walking back better for the sled pull?+
Use both. Hand over hand does most of the work, and stepping back inside your Racers Box adds leg drive and bodyweight. The box is only a step or two deep, and you can't step on its back line while holding the rope, so you can't walk the whole lane.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →How do I train for the sled push and pull without a sled?+
Use wall push holds, sandbag or plate pushes, cable rope pulls, sandbag drags, and squats, lunges, rows and deadlifts. Run before and after these sessions.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →What are the most common sled penalties at HYROX?+
Turning the sled before it fully crosses the line, leaving your lane, pulling while seated or kneeling, and stepping on the Racers Box lines: a warning first, then 15 seconds each. Missing a lane is a disqualification.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →Can I use chalk or gloves on the sleds?+
Gloves are allowed on both. Chalk is allowed at the sled pull, but only the chalk HYROX provides there. Your own chalk, or chalk at the sled push, earns a 2-minute penalty.
More in: HYROX sled push and sled pull →How do I get better at HYROX wall balls?+
Train them when tired, especially after running or lunges, and build squat and push-press strength. Rehearse your exact race split in sessions like a 1 km run into 100 reps. Practice on a target that's the right height, with your race-weight ball.
More in: HYROX wall balls →How should I break up 100 wall balls at HYROX?+
Plan descending sets such as 25-20-15-15-15-10, with short rests of a few breaths. Start with a set you could beat by 3 to 5 reps. Going unbroken often ends in a long stall that costs more time than planned breaks.
More in: HYROX wall balls →What is the HYROX wall ball standard?+
Start standing tall with the ball in both hands. Squat until your hips are below your knees, then throw with both hands so the ball hits your designated target. Catch it, or let it drop and stand up with it, before the next rep. Catching it off a bounce isn't allowed.
More in: HYROX wall balls →How heavy is the HYROX wall ball and how high is the target?+
Open women use 4 kg. Open men and Women Pro use 6 kg. Men Pro use 9 kg. Women throw to 2.70 m and men to 3.00 m, in both Open and Pro.
More in: HYROX wall balls →How deep do I have to squat for wall balls?+
Your hips must go below your knees at the bottom of every rep. Judges may put a squat depth box behind you to check, but you can't request one or rest on it.
More in: HYROX wall balls →What causes a no-rep on wall balls?+
The most common causes are shallow squats, throws that miss or fall short of the target, hitting the wrong target, catching the ball off a bounce, and scooping the ball off the floor without standing up first. There are no warnings at this station.
More in: HYROX wall balls →Can I take my shoes off for wall balls?+
Yes. Once you reach your target, you can take your shoes off and put them under the rig. You have to carry them to the finish after your 100th rep, and you can't come back for them later.
More in: HYROX wall balls →How should I breathe during wall balls?+
Breathe out as you drive up and throw, and in as you catch and squat. Add an extra breath at the top if you need it.
More in: HYROX wall balls →Can I use chalk at the wall balls?+
No. Powdered chalk at the wall ball station is a 2-minute penalty. HYROX chalk is only allowed at the sled pull and farmers carry.
More in: HYROX wall balls →What happens if I stop before 100 wall balls?+
Leaving the wall balls before 100 valid reps is a disqualification under the 26/27 rulebook. Take as many short rests as you need, but finish the station.
More in: HYROX wall balls →What damper setting should I use on the HYROX SkiErg and rower?+
Both are preset to damper 6, and you can change it before you start. Use the setting you trained on; Concept2 suggests around 3 to 5 for most athletes. Higher feels heavier but isn't automatically faster, and damper numbers vary between machines, so check the drag factor in training.
More in: HYROX station tips →How do I use the SkiErg and rower efficiently?+
Drive with your legs and body weight, and let your arms finish the stroke. On the rower, push with legs, swing your body, then pull, and take twice as long on the recovery. Pace each 1,000 m at about your 5,000 m effort rather than all-out.
More in: HYROX station tips →What are the penalties on the SkiErg and rower?+
On the SkiErg, a foot touching the floor is a warning first, then 15 seconds per infringement. On the rower, leaving the seat before 1,000 m follows the same protocol. Leaving either machine before finishing 1,000 m is a disqualification.
More in: HYROX station tips →How do I stop my grip failing on the HYROX farmers carry?+
Hold the handles firmly but not at maximum, keep your shoulders back and your arms straight, and walk fast with short steps instead of running. Take a planned break, often around halfway, before your grip fails. Build grip with heavy carries, dead hangs and carries done after running or rowing.
More in: HYROX station tips →Can I put the kettlebells down during the farmers carry?+
Yes. You can set them down to rest as long as they don't move forward when you place them. Return them upright to the correct box at the end, or you get a 30-second penalty.
More in: HYROX station tips →Does your knee have to touch the ground on HYROX sandbag lunges?+
Yes. Your trailing knee must clearly touch the ground on every rep, and you must stand fully tall at the top. A missed touch or an incomplete stand is a warning first, then 15 seconds per infringement.
More in: HYROX station tips →What is the correct technique for HYROX sandbag lunges?+
Carry the bag high on both shoulders, take a medium stride, lower your back knee under control until it touches, then drive up through your front heel to stand tall. Alternate legs with no extra steps. If you rest, keep the bag on your shoulders, because putting it down is a 15-second penalty.
More in: HYROX station tips →Should I step up or jump up on HYROX burpee broad jumps?+
Most racers should step up. It's a little slower per rep but keeps your heart rate and leg fatigue lower for the runs ahead. Both methods are legal, and you can also put a knee down or switch methods mid-station.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →What are the HYROX burpee broad jump rules?+
Your chest must clearly touch the floor on every burpee. Your hands land no more than 30 cm in front of your toes and can't move once they're down. Then jump forward with both feet taking off and landing together. Your feet can't land beyond your fingertips when you come up, and extra steps or shuffles aren't allowed.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →What is the 5 cm stagger rule in burpee broad jumps?+
Under the 26/27 rulebook, the fronts of your two feet can be no more than 5 cm apart on take-off and landing. Anything more counts as an infringement, and so does a shuffle to fix your feet.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →How far is the burpee broad jump station?+
80 m for every division, using bodyweight only. Depending on the venue, it may be split into sections with turns. You must jump fully across each white line before turning.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →How many burpee broad jumps is 80 m?+
It depends on your jump length. At 1.6 m per jump it's about 50 reps, and at 2 m it's about 40. One coaching guide puts most athletes at roughly 40 to 60.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →How far should each broad jump be?+
It's up to you. Use a moderate, repeatable jump with a strong arm swing, not a maximal leap.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →How should I pace burpee broad jumps?+
Start slower than you want, then hold a steady rhythm you could keep for all 80 m. Take two- or three-breath pauses instead of long rests, and save energy for the run.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →What is the penalty for a bad burpee broad jump?+
Your first infringement gets a warning. The second earns a 15-second penalty, and each one after that adds another 15 seconds. If a foot lands on the finish line, you have to do one more rep.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →How should I breathe during burpee broad jumps?+
Breathe out on the jump and on the way down, and in as you come up. Never hold your breath. Add an extra breath at the top if you need it.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →How do I train for burpee broad jumps?+
Do distance ladders and EMOMs for technique, then practice them tired, straight after a 1 km run or a sled session. Add squats, lunges, jumps and push-ups for strength, and build volume gradually.
More in: HYROX burpee broad jumps →Nutrition and recovery
What should I eat before a HYROX race?+
A familiar, carbohydrate-based meal that's low in fat and fiber, such as oats with banana, toast with jam or rice with eggs. General sports-nutrition guidance suggests about 1 to 4 g of carbs per kg of body weight in the 1 to 4 hours before. Add a small carb snack 30 to 90 minutes before your wave, and don't try…
More in: What to eat before and during a HYROX race →How long before a HYROX race should I eat?+
Finish your main meal 2 to 4 hours before your wave, then have a light snack 30 to 90 minutes before. Plan the timing from your start time, not the venue opening time, and bring your own snacks because waves run all day.
More in: What to eat before and during a HYROX race →Do I need gels or fuel during HYROX?+
If you'll finish in under about 45 minutes, no. Between about 45 and 75 minutes, a small amount is optional. Above about 75 minutes, one gel around halfway, or 30 to 60 g of carbs per hour, usually helps. Under the rulebook you must carry your fuel from the start, nobody can hand it to you, and wrappers go in the bins.
More in: What to eat before and during a HYROX race →Should I take caffeine before HYROX?+
If you tolerate it, yes. 3 to 6 mg per kg of body weight about an hour before the start is the range the research supports, and lower doses may also work. Test your dose in training first, and skip it if you have a heart condition, are pregnant or take medication that interacts with stimulants.
More in: What to eat before and during a HYROX race →How should I hydrate (electrolytes) for HYROX?+
Drink about 5 to 10 mL per kg of body weight in the 2 to 4 hours before your start, then sip water at the Roxzone aid stations during the race. Consider electrolytes if you're a salty sweater, race somewhere warm or will be out for more than about 90 minutes. Don't over-drink, and don't pour aid-station water over…
More in: What to eat before and during a HYROX race →How long does it take to recover after a HYROX race?+
Most age-group racers feel mostly normal within three to seven days, with soreness peaking one to two days after. Keep the first week easy and bring back hard training over the second week.
More in: HYROX recovery and injuries →What are the most common HYROX injuries? Is HYROX safe?+
The most common problems are overuse niggles in the knees, lower back, shins, calves and shoulders, mostly from volume and fatigue rather than accidents. For healthy adults who build up gradually, HYROX is a reasonable sport. There's no reliable published injury rate yet, so check with your doctor first if you have a…
More in: HYROX recovery and injuries →How do I avoid knee and lower-back pain from sleds and lunges?+
Build lunge and sled volume up over weeks, strengthen your hips, quads and trunk, and keep a braced, neutral back on the sleds and rower. Practice at lighter loads before race weight. If pain is sharp, in one spot or getting worse, stop and see a physiotherapist.
More in: HYROX recovery and injuries →How often can I race HYROX? How far apart should races be?+
There's no official limit. A conservative rule of thumb is at least four to six weeks between all-out Singles races, and eight to twelve weeks if you want to train and improve in between. Doubles and Relay usually take less out of you, but still count as a hard day.
More in: HYROX recovery and injuries →What should I eat and do right after a HYROX race?+
Walk for a few minutes, get into dry clothes, then eat carbohydrate plus about 15 to 25 g of protein and drink to replace your sweat losses. Keep alcohol modest and prioritize sleep. Easy movement over the next two days usually feels better than complete rest.
More in: HYROX recovery and injuries →Is HYROX good for weight loss?+
HYROX training can support weight loss because it gets you training hard and consistently, but exercise alone usually produces only modest loss. Combine it with a small, sustainable calorie deficit, enough protein and a slow rate of loss, around 0.5 to 1% of body weight per week. If you have a medical condition or a…
More in: Is HYROX good for weight loss? Calories burned and body composition →How many calories does a HYROX race burn?+
Roughly 500 to 1,500 kcal for most racers, depending on body weight and finish time. A 75 kg racer finishing in about 90 minutes burns very roughly 900 to 1,240 kcal. These figures are estimates based on activity energy-cost tables, because no study has directly measured a full race yet.
More in: Is HYROX good for weight loss? Calories burned and body composition →Does HYROX training build muscle?+
Yes, some, especially for beginners, but it's not the fastest way to build size. Research shows that cardio doesn't block muscle growth when you also lift, so add two heavy strength sessions a week and eat about 1.4 to 2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight daily.
More in: Is HYROX good for weight loss? Calories burned and body composition →Will losing weight make me faster at HYROX?+
It can help if you're carrying extra body fat, because running makes up about half the race. But fitness (VO2max and endurance training) predicted finish time at least as strongly in research, and getting too light can hurt you on the sleds. Train for fitness first, and don't diet hard close to a race.
More in: Is HYROX good for weight loss? Calories burned and body composition →Can I train for HYROX while eating in a calorie deficit?+
Yes, as long as the deficit is small. Keep protein high, eat carbs before and after your hardest sessions, and go back to maintenance in race week. Ongoing fatigue, frequent illness or injury, or missed periods are signs you're eating too little.
More in: Is HYROX good for weight loss? Calories burned and body composition →Does HYROX improve VO2max?+
Very likely. No study has yet measured VO2max before and after a HYROX training block, but HYROX training combines endurance running and hard intervals, the two methods with the best evidence for raising VO2max. Meta-analyses show gains of about 5 ml/kg/min with either method.
More in: HYROX and your heart →What is a good VO2max for HYROX?+
There's no official target, and it depends on your age, sex and goals. In a small lab study, a higher VO2max went with faster simulated race times, along with more weekly endurance training. Focus on improving your own number and your field-test times rather than a fixed figure.
More in: HYROX and your heart →Why does cardiorespiratory fitness predict lifespan?+
Large cohort studies consistently find that fitter people live longer. Each 1-MET step up in fitness is linked to about 11% to 17% lower risk of death. Fitness reflects how well your heart, blood vessels and muscles work together. These studies show a link rather than proof of cause, but people who improve their…
More in: HYROX and your heart →How long does it take to improve VO2max?+
Most training studies last 6 to 12 weeks and find clear gains in that time with regular endurance and interval training. Beginners improve fastest. Progress slows as you get fitter.
More in: HYROX and your heart →Is my watch's VO2max accurate?+
It's a reasonable estimate across groups of people but can be well off for any one person, by up to about 10 ml/kg/min in research. Track the trend over months and pair it with a repeatable field test, such as a 5 km run or a 2,000 m row.
More in: HYROX and your heart →Is HYROX safe for your heart?+
For most people, yes, and regular exercise lowers overall heart risk. Vigorous exercise briefly raises the risk of a cardiac event in people with existing heart disease, especially if they're inactive and unaccustomed to hard exercise. Get checked if you have symptoms or risk factors, build up gradually, and stop if…
More in: HYROX and your heart →How much cardio do I need for heart health?+
The WHO recommends 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, or 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity, each week, plus two strength days. Three HYROX-style sessions with some easy running meets that. Training beyond that mostly improves your race time.
More in: HYROX and your heart →Is HYROX good for your mental health?+
For most people, very likely. No study has looked at HYROX and mental health directly, but the running, intervals and strength work it involves are the kinds of exercise shown in many trials to ease symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. A race goal and a training group may add to that. It's a support, not a…
More in: HYROX and mental health →Does exercise help with depression?+
Yes. Large reviews of hundreds of trials show exercise gives moderate reductions in depression symptoms, with harder sessions working better. Long-term studies also link regular activity to a lower risk of developing depression. NICE lists group exercise as one first-line option for less severe depression, alongside…
More in: HYROX and mental health →Can HYROX training help with anxiety and stress?+
Probably. Physical activity has a medium-sized effect on anxiety and distress in research, and the CDC notes a single session can reduce short-term anxiety. Strength training also reduced anxiety in trials.
More in: HYROX and mental health →Does strength training help your mood?+
Yes. A meta-analysis of 33 trials found resistance training gave a moderate reduction in depression symptoms, and the benefit didn't depend on how much strength people gained. In another large analysis, strength training worked about as well as other exercise and was one of the easiest forms to stick with.
More in: HYROX and mental health →How much exercise do you need for a mental health benefit?+
Less than most HYROX plans. In a large dose-response study, about 2.5 hours of brisk walking a week was linked to a 25% lower risk of depression, and even half that helped. A US survey found the best mental health with sessions of about 45 minutes, three to five times a week.
More in: HYROX and mental health →Can signing up for a race build confidence?+
For many people, yes. Goal-setting research shows a medium-sized boost to how much people exercise, and a race date makes the goal concrete. Breaking the race into runs and stations gives you small wins along the way, though no study has measured confidence in HYROX racers.
More in: HYROX and mental health →Does the HYROX community help mental health?+
It can help a little. Group exercise programs showed small, mostly non-significant advantages over solo ones in a 2026 meta-analysis. The WHO says lonely people are twice as likely to become depressed, so a regular class or a Doubles partner is a useful way to stay connected.
More in: HYROX and mental health →Can too much training hurt your mental health?+
Yes. Overtraining, meaning hard training without enough recovery, is linked to ongoing fatigue, poor performance and mood disturbance. Watch for flat mood, poor sleep, falling times and guilt about missing sessions, and take an easy week if they appear.
More in: HYROX and mental health →Can HYROX replace therapy or medication?+
No. Exercise is one well-supported option, but it should be chosen with a professional, not used instead of treatment. Keep up any current treatment, never change medication without medical advice, and seek help right away if you're in crisis.
More in: HYROX and mental health →How do I deal with HYROX race nerves?+
Prepare so there are fewer unknowns: rehearse the stations, plan race week and start the first run slower than you want to. If anxiety is severe or persistent, talk to a professional.
More in: HYROX and mental health →Is HYROX good for your bones?+
For most people, yes. Bones get stronger in response to impact and heavy resistance, and HYROX training includes running, jumping, sleds, lunges and carries. No study has measured bone density in HYROX athletes, so the evidence comes from exercise research in general. Adding two heavy lifting sessions a week makes the…
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Can HYROX help prevent osteoporosis?+
It may help, but it isn't a treatment on its own. Trials in postmenopausal women show strength and impact training can slow or slightly reverse bone loss, with the biggest effects from heavy, progressive lifting. Whether exercise reduces fractures is less clear.
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Is HYROX good for women going through menopause?+
Generally yes, as long as the training includes heavy strength work as well as cardio. Low estrogen after menopause raises osteoporosis risk, and the LIFTMOR trial showed supervised heavy lifting plus impact work increased spine bone density in postmenopausal women with low bone mass.
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Is running bad for your knees?+
Not for most people. A large meta-analysis found hip and knee arthritis in 3.5% of recreational runners, compared with 10.2% of non-runners. The rate was higher (13.3%) only in elite, competitive runners. Knee pain in HYROX usually comes from increasing running and lunges too quickly.
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Is HYROX bad for your joints?+
Not for most healthy adults, but it loads the knees heavily. In the only HYROX injury study, the knee was the most commonly injured area and most injuries were from overuse. Build lunge, wall-ball and running volume gradually and strengthen your hips and quads.
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Can I do HYROX with knee arthritis?+
Often, yes, with medical advice and some adjustments. Exercise is recommended by every major guideline for knee osteoarthritis and tends to improve function. Swap some running for the rower, SkiErg or bike, and consider Doubles or Relay to share the load.
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Can I do HYROX with osteoporosis?+
Possibly, with individual advice. UK consensus guidance recommends strength and impact exercise for most people with osteoporosis, but advises avoiding heavily loaded spinal flexion. People with vertebral or multiple fractures should usually keep impact to brisk-walking level. A physical therapist can tell you which…
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Which HYROX stations are best for bone health?+
The ones with high force or impact: sled push, sled pull, sandbag lunges, farmers carry and burpee broad jumps, plus the running. The rower and SkiErg are great cardio but load your bones much less, much like cycling and swimming.
More in: Is HYROX good for your bones and joints? →Race day
How should I pace the runs in HYROX?+
By effort, not pace: about 5–6 out of 10 on run 1, 6–7 on runs 2–4, 7 on runs 5–6, and 8–9 on the last two. Your pace will drift slower as the race goes on even when effort stays steady, and that's normal.
More in: HYROX pacing strategy and the Roxzone →What is the Roxzone in HYROX?+
The transition area between the running track and the stations. The clock keeps running there, so walk or jog through it with purpose, know where each station's entry and exit are, and time your transitions in race simulations.
More in: HYROX pacing strategy and the Roxzone →What order are the HYROX stations in?+
SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, row, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls, each after a 1 km run. The order is the same at every race and in every division.
More in: HYROX pacing strategy and the Roxzone →How do I stay focused when HYROX gets hard?+
Break the race into eight run-plus-station blocks, decide your wall ball sets before you start, and use one short cue word per station. Your job at the end of each station is only to start the next run, even slowly.
More in: HYROX pacing strategy and the Roxzone →Can I wear gloves at HYROX?+
Yes. Gloves are on the permitted list, but grips are not. Many racers use thin gloves for the sled pull rope and the farmers carry handles.
More in: What to bring to a HYROX race →Can I bring my own chalk to HYROX?+
No. Only the chalk HYROX provides is allowed, and only at the sled pull and the farmers carry. Using your own chalk, or using chalk at the wall balls, is a 2-minute penalty.
More in: What to bring to a HYROX race →Can I wear headphones during a HYROX race?+
No. Headphones, phones, body cameras and smart glasses are all banned on the course.
More in: What to bring to a HYROX race →Can I carry my own gels?+
Yes, as long as you carry them from the start. You can't take food or drink from anyone except the official aid stations, and wrappers must go in the bins.
More in: What to bring to a HYROX race →Do I need my phone at the race?+
You need your registration confirmation and ID at check-in, so it's handy before the race. Leave the phone in your bag drop while you race. Phones aren't allowed on the course.
More in: What to bring to a HYROX race →Are there showers and changing rooms at HYROX?+
There are changing rooms at every event, but usually no showers, so bring wipes, a towel and a full change of clothes. Bag drop is available for one small bag; lockers are up to the venue and often aren't available.
More in: What to bring to a HYROX race →Can I listen to music during HYROX?+
No. Headphones, earbuds and phones are all banned on the race floor.
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →Can I use my own chalk at HYROX?+
No. Only HYROX-provided chalk at the sled pull and farmers carry is allowed. Your own chalk, or chalk at the wall balls, is a 2-minute penalty.
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →Are gloves allowed at HYROX?+
Yes, gloves are on the permitted list. Gymnastics grips are not.
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →Can my coach or a friend give me water during the race?+
No. Taking anything from anyone except the official aid stations is outside assistance and costs 2 minutes each time.
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →Can I wear a smartwatch at HYROX?+
Watches aren't on the rulebook's permitted list, and unlisted items are prohibited by default. Ask your event's customer service before race day if you want to race with one.
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →What happens if I miss a run lap?+
You get a time penalty of 3 to 7 minutes per missed lap, depending on how many laps make up each 1 km at that venue. On a single-lap course, a missed lap means missing the whole run, which is a disqualification.
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →What are the new HYROX rules for 2026/27?+
The big ones: any incomplete station is a DQ, lunge faults and bag drops cost 15 seconds each after a warning, burpee broad jumps allow at most a 5 cm foot stagger, Doubles partners must stay together, and tickets can't be switched to another event or division. See HYROX rule changes for…
More in: What's not allowed at HYROX →How early should I arrive?+
Give yourself enough time to check in, drop your bag, use the bathroom, walk the course, and warm up without rushing. Check your event page for any specific arrival guidance.
More in: Your first HYROX race →Can I walk during the runs?+
Yes. Walking is allowed. Many athletes walk parts of the later runs, and that's completely fine.
More in: Your first HYROX race →What happens if I lose count of my laps?+
Stay calm and use whatever lap-tracking system the venue provides. Counting with a simple method, like tapping a finger each lap, helps prevent this.
More in: Your first HYROX race →Can I wear gloves?+
Yes. Gloves are on the rulebook's list of permitted items, but gymnastics-style grips are not, and only the chalk HYROX provides at the sled pull and farmers carry may be used. See what's not allowed at HYROX(/guides/hyrox-rules-what-is-not-allowed) for the full list.
More in: Your first HYROX race →What if I can't finish a station?+
Take short breaks, reset, and keep chipping away: most stations can be done in small chunks. Don't leave a station before it's complete, though. Under the 26/27 rules, failing to finish a workout station in full means no official result (you can carry on around the course, but without a final time). If you're unsure…
More in: Your first HYROX race →What are the most common mistakes in a first HYROX race?+
Going out too fast on the first run, losing count of laps, leaving a station before it's finished, doing stations out of order, and trying new shoes or fuel on race day. The first costs you minutes late in the race, and the others carry time penalties or a DQ under the 26/27 rules.
More in: Your first HYROX race →How far apart can HYROX Doubles partners be?+
You must run every 1,000 m together; if one partner runs ahead, it's a 1-minute penalty, and more than 3 togetherness penalties means Out of Competition. Media coverage of the 26/27 season also reports a 10-second maximum gap measured at the timing mats, though we couldn't find that number in the rulebook text. Run…
More in: HYROX Doubles strategy →Do both partners have to do every station in HYROX Doubles?+
No. You both enter and leave each station together, but inside the station you split the work however you like. Most teams alternate short chunks on the machines and wall balls and split the sleds and carry by distance.
More in: HYROX Doubles strategy →What weights do HYROX Doubles use?+
Doubles uses the singles loads for your category: Open loads for Doubles Women and Men, the men's loads for Doubles Mixed, and the heavier Pro loads for Pro Doubles. The stations and weights guide(/guides/hyrox-stations-weights) has every number.
More in: HYROX Doubles strategy →How should we split the stations in Doubles?+
Plan every split before race day and rehearse it. Use short, frequent switches on the SkiErg, row and wall balls, longer turns on the sleds, and give the stronger runner a bit more station work so you can both run faster.
More in: HYROX Doubles strategy →What are the best shoes for HYROX?+
The best shoe is a stable, moderately cushioned running shoe or hybrid trainer that you've already trained in. It needs good grip for the sleds, a firm base for lunges and wall balls, and enough cushioning for 8 km of running. Fit and stability matter more than the brand.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →Does HYROX have a shoe rule?+
Yes. You must wear closed-toe shoes for the whole race. The only exception is the wall balls, where you may take your shoes off, leave them under the rig, and carry them to the finish when you're done.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →Should I wear running shoes or CrossFit shoes for HYROX?+
For most people, a stable running shoe or a hybrid shoe is the better choice, because half the race is running. CrossFit-style training shoes are very stable at the stations but feel harsh over 8 km. They suit strong lifters who run less.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →Are carbon-plated shoes good for HYROX?+
They're legal and fast on the runs, but usually soft and narrow, so they feel less stable on sleds and lunges. For a first race, a stable trainer is usually a better bet.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →What shoes do HYROX athletes wear?+
PUMA is HYROX's official footwear partner through 2030, and many elite racers wear PUMA. In 2026 PUMA released a HYROX-specific carbon-plated shoe, listed on its site as the PUMA x HYROX Deviate NITRO Elite 4. Availability varies by region.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →What shoes have the best grip for the sled push?+
Look for a full rubber outsole with lugs or a textured tread, not exposed foam or a smooth racing sole, and make sure it isn't worn down. Sled lane surfaces vary between venues.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →Can you wear spikes at HYROX?+
The rulebook doesn't mention spikes, but they're impractical on indoor turf and venue floors, and they don't help at the stations. Wear normal closed-toe running or training shoes, and check with your event's organizers if you're unsure about anything unusual.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →Can you take your shoes off for wall balls?+
Yes. Once you're at your wall ball target you can remove your shoes and put them under the rig. You must take them with you to the finish, because you can't return to the wall ball area.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →What socks should I wear for HYROX?+
Thin to medium running socks in a synthetic or merino blend that don't slip, ideally crew or quarter length to protect your ankles on the rower and with the sandbag. Wear a pair you've already trained in, and pack a spare.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →How long should I break in new HYROX shoes?+
Get them at least four to six weeks before your race and do several full sessions in them, including running, sleds, lunges and a race simulation. Never race in brand-new shoes.
More in: Best shoes for HYROX →What are the most common first-race mistakes at HYROX?+
The big ones are going out too fast on run 1, never training running on tired legs, skipping sled practice, and trying new shoes or fuel on race day. On course, the most costly slips are miscounting laps, using the wrong Roxzone arch, bringing your own chalk and leaving a station before it's finished.
More in: Common HYROX mistakes →What happens if I don't finish a station at HYROX?+
Under the 26/27 rulebook, every station must be completed in full. An incomplete station is a disqualification, so you won't get an official time or ranking, although you may be allowed to continue around the course. Take breaks if you need them, but finish the work.
More in: Common HYROX mistakes →What happens if I miss a lap or go through the wrong arch?+
A missed run lap costs 3 to 7 minutes depending on how many laps make up each 1 km at that venue, and it's a disqualification on a one-lap course. Going through the wrong Roxzone arch costs 2 minutes each time.
More in: Common HYROX mistakes →How do I remember the HYROX station order?+
The order is SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, row, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. Learn it in pairs, rehearse it in training and say the next station to yourself at the start of every run. If you skip one, you can complete it before the wall balls, but the first station done out of…
More in: Common HYROX mistakes →How long before my start should I warm up?+
Plan about 15 to 20 minutes of easy jogging, mobility, strides and light movement prep, finishing just before you need to be at the start tunnel, 10 minutes before your start time. That way you start warm without using energy you'll need later.
More in: Common HYROX mistakes →How do I taper for a HYROX race?+
Cut training volume by about 30–40% the week before race week and to about half in race week, while keeping a little intensity. Research on tapering supports a two-week cut in volume of roughly 40–60% with intensity maintained. Do short easy runs with a few pick-ups, one short race-pace sharpener, and nothing new.
More in: HYROX race week →How do I stay mentally strong during HYROX?+
Break the race into eight run-and-station blocks and focus only on the one you're in. Use short cue words you've practiced in training, plan your wall ball sets before the race, and count down within each set rather than up.
More in: HYROX race week →Are there showers at HYROX?+
Usually not. The official HYROX FAQs say showers aren't provided, so bring a towel, wipes and a full change of clothes. Check your event's athlete information in case your venue is different.
More in: HYROX race week →Are there lockers and changing rooms at HYROX?+
Every event has changing rooms and a secure bag drop for one small bag per athlete. HYROX doesn't arrange lockers, though some venues have their own. Don't leave belongings in the changing rooms, and collect your bag within about an hour of finishing.
More in: HYROX race week →What changed in the 26/27 HYROX rules?+
The main changes: failing to complete any station in full is now a DQ or no official result; lunge and burpee broad jump faults cost 15 seconds each after one warning, and taking the sandbag off your shoulders costs 15 seconds every time; broad jumps allow at most 5 cm of foot stagger; Doubles partners must stay…
More in: HYROX rule changes for 2026/27 →Doubles: how far apart can partners be?+
Very close. The official Doubles rulebook says you must run every 1,000 m together, with a 1-minute penalty if one partner runs ahead, and more than three such penalties makes your team Out of Competition. Rule summaries report a 10-second maximum gap measured at the Roxzone timing mats, so stay side by side.
More in: HYROX rule changes for 2026/27 →What happens if I can't finish a HYROX station?+
Under the 26/27 rules you get no official result or ranking for that race. If a Race Director disqualifies you, you must stop. If you just can't complete a station, you may carry on racing, but without a final time.
More in: HYROX rule changes for 2026/27 →Is the sandbag lunge drop still a DQ?+
No. Under the 26/27 rulebook, taking the sandbag off your shoulders, whether it's onto the floor, a barrier or your foot, costs 15 seconds each time. Using the wrong bag weight is still a DQ unless you redo the whole station with the right bag.
More in: HYROX rule changes for 2026/27 →What is the 5 cm rule in burpee broad jumps?+
The fronts of your two feet can be no more than 5 cm apart when you take off and when you land. A bigger stagger, or a shuffle to fix your feet, is a fault: a warning first, then 15 seconds each time.
More in: HYROX rule changes for 2026/27 →What does Out of Ranking mean at HYROX?+
It means HYROX has excluded an event, day or part of a day from World Championship and Elite qualification because conditions such as wet turf or extreme heat affected the race. Out of Competition is different: it applies to an individual racer or team, for example after injury modifications.
More in: HYROX rule changes for 2026/27 →How does the HYROX Relay work?+
Four teammates share one full race. Each person runs 2 × 1 km and does the two stations that follow those runs. The legs run in the normal 1–8 order, teammates hand over with a high-five in the Transition Zone, and all four cross the finish together after the wall balls.
More in: HYROX Relay Guide →Relay: who should do which stations?+
Give the sleds (legs 2 and 3) to your strongest athlete, wall balls (leg 8) to someone reliable, and the SkiErg and row (legs 1 and 5) to a good runner. A simple plan that works for most teams is an A-B-C-D-A-B-C-D rotation: SkiErg + row, sled push + farmers carry, sled pull + lunges, and burpee broad jumps + wall…
More in: HYROX Relay Guide →Is the station order fixed for each Relay athlete?+
The race order is fixed (legs 1 to 8), but which teammate does which legs is up to you. Each person does exactly two legs, either back to back or split up. If you do two in a row, you must run through the Transition Zone between them.
More in: HYROX Relay Guide →What weights does the Relay use?+
Open loads. Women use 102 kg on the sled push, 78 kg on the sled pull, 2 × 16 kg kettlebells, a 10 kg sandbag and a 4 kg wall ball. Men use 152 kg, 103 kg, 2 × 24 kg, 20 kg and 6 kg. In Mixed, each athlete uses the load for their own sex, and there's no Pro Relay.
More in: HYROX Relay Guide →What's the minimum age? Can kids or teens do HYROX (Youngstars)?+
You must be at least 16 on race day for Singles, Doubles or Relay. Kids aged 8 to 15 can race HYROX Youngstars, a separate race with age categories, shorter runs and adapted stations, held only at selected events.
More in: HYROX Relay Guide →Can a 16-year-old do a HYROX Relay?+
Yes. Anyone who is 16 on race day can race Relay. It's a great first race for a teenager. Check the event's terms for any extra requirements for under-18s.

More in: How much does HYROX cost? Ticket prices by city, Flex, refunds and sell-outs →Can I get a refund, transfer my ticket or change the name?+
Only with the Flex add-on, bought at checkout. Flex gives a 100% refund up to 31 days before race day, 50% up to 7 days before, and one name change up to the day before. Lite Flex gives a name change only. Transfers to another event or day aren't possible, and tickets without Flex can't be changed.
More in: How much does HYROX cost? Ticket prices by city, Flex, refunds and sell-outs →Can I switch division after booking, e.g. Pro to Open?+
No. HYROX doesn't allow division changes after purchase in 26/27, even with Flex. If you have Flex, you can request a refund within the window and rebook, if tickets are still available.
More in: How much does HYROX cost? Ticket prices by city, Flex, refunds and sell-outs →Do spectators need a ticket at HYROX?+
Yes. Spectator tickets cost roughly £10 to US$20 per day, or HK$200 in Hong Kong. Children 12 and under often get in free, sometimes with a free ticket. Spectator tickets are non-refundable.

More in: How to qualify for the HYROX World Championships (Hong Kong 2027) →Do I need an athlete licence to qualify for HYROX Worlds?+
Not for age group qualification. Any registered athlete can earn a spot. A licence means rolled-down offers can still reach you if you finish lower down the results. The Elite route does require an active HYROX Athlete Licence.
More in: How to qualify for the HYROX World Championships (Hong Kong 2027) →How do elite HYROX athletes train?+
Most train twice a day, around 11–16 sessions a week, with morning quality running, two or three strength sessions and some compromised running. Their hard sessions are spread out with easy cardio in between. Age groupers should copy the structure but not the volume.
More in: How to qualify for the HYROX World Championships (Hong Kong 2027) →Where can I watch HYROX? Is there a livestream?+

More in: How to qualify for the HYROX World Championships (Hong Kong 2027) →Is there a HYROX discount code?+
Not a public one. As of October 15, 2026, there's no promo code for race entry on HYROX's official site, regional sites or event pages. The codes HYROX does issue go to volunteers, training club members and similar groups, and they're personal and non-transferable. Codes on coupon sites are fake or belong to someone…
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Do HYROX gyms give discount codes?+
Official HYROX Training Clubs usually get presale codes, which give members early access rather than a lower price. Virgin Active, for example, shares codes for UK races by app or email. Ask your gym directly.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Are there HYROX ambassador or influencer codes for tickets?+
We found no official ambassador or creator code for race entry. Codes posted by athletes are usually for gear, supplements or apps from their sponsors. Treat anyone offering a ticket discount code by DM as a scam.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Do HYROX partner brands offer discounts?+
Some do, mostly on travel. Hyatt, HYROX's official regional hotel partner in Asia Pacific, offers 10% off its Member Rate at participating hotels in race cities, plus dining and spa discounts. Offers are regional, so check the official event page for your race.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Is HYROX Doubles or Relay cheaper?+
Yes, per person. Doubles is slightly cheaper than Singles, and Relay is the cheapest: in London, about £75 per person against £128 for Singles.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Is there an early-bird discount for HYROX?+
We couldn't find an official early-bird price for the 26/27 season. Booking early gets you your preferred day and wave and a place before sell-outs, which can save you a costly trip to a backup city.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Do HYROX volunteers get a free race entry?+
In many regions, yes, but the reward varies. US volunteers earn Reward Points toward free or discounted tickets. Benelux gives one free regional entry per completed shift, and Cologne offers a free German race entry or a shop voucher. Hong Kong's crew perks for January 2027 list a merch voucher but no free entry.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Can I use my HSA or FSA for a HYROX ticket?+

More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Will my employer pay for my HYROX entry?+
It's worth asking. Wellness stipends and team-building budgets can cover an entry, and a Relay team of colleagues is an easy pitch.
More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →Is it safe to buy HYROX tickets secondhand?+
No. Resold or copied tickets and codes can be cancelled without compensation, and scammers use fake confirmations and lookalike sites. Buy only from official HYROX sites and use the official waitlist.

More in: HYROX discount codes and coupons →How much does a HYROX race weekend cost?+
Racing locally, little more than the ticket: roughly £128 or €119 for Singles plus transit and food. A short trip with one or two hotel nights usually runs to several hundred dollars, and a long-haul race often passes $1,000 once flights are in. Use the race cost calculator with your own numbers.
More in: How much does a HYROX race weekend really cost? Budget by city →How much is a hotel for a HYROX race?+
It depends on the city and how close you stay, and prices rise on race weekends. As a planning figure, budget about £100–300 for one to two nights in London. Compare a walk-to-venue hotel with a cheaper base on a direct transit line, and book a refundable rate when you buy your ticket.
More in: How much does a HYROX race weekend really cost? Budget by city →How many nights should I book for a HYROX race?+
One night before is enough for most morning waves if you're traveling a few hours. With an afternoon wave and a short train ride, you may not need a hotel at all. If you're flying long-haul, plan two or three nights so you aren't racing straight off a flight.
More in: How much does a HYROX race weekend really cost? Budget by city →What's the cheapest way to get from the airport to a HYROX venue?+
Usually public transport. Many venues sit on a rail line, such as ExCeL London on the Elizabeth line, Hong Kong's AsiaWorld-Expo one Airport Express stop from the airport, and Helsinki's Messukeskus by Pasila station. In Nashville and Tampa, a $2 bus replaces a $30–35 taxi.

More in: How to get paid to race HYROX (as an amateur) →Do I have to label sponsored posts?+
Yes. In the US, the FTC requires a clear disclosure of paid or free-product relationships right next to the endorsement, and a brand tag alone isn't enough. The UK and most other countries have similar rules.
More in: How to get paid to race HYROX (as an amateur) →Is it allowed to wear sponsor logos at a HYROX race?+
The rulebook doesn't ban logos, but HYROX's regional ticket terms restrict promoting businesses that aren't HYROX partners at the event, with removal as the stated penalty. Read your event's terms, keep logos modest and agree a backup plan with sponsors.
More in: How to get paid to race HYROX (as an amateur) →Is HYROX sponsorship money taxable?+

More in: How to get paid to race HYROX (as an amateur) →Can you race HYROX for free?+
Yes, through a few legit routes: volunteering where your region rewards a shift with an entry, winning an official gym or partner contest, getting your employer to pay, or having sponsors cover the cost. There's no public free-entry code. Charity places are discounted, not free, because you commit to fundraising.
More in: Can you race HYROX for free? Every legit way to cover your entry →Are there official HYROX giveaways for free tickets?+

More in: Can you race HYROX for free? Every legit way to cover your entry →Are HYROX charity places free?+

More in: Racing HYROX for charity →What is the HYROX charity fundraising minimum?+
It varies by event. HYROX's global page lists €300 for Singles, €500 for Doubles and €800 for Relay teams. Other events list more: £400 for UK Singles, US$600 at San Diego and HK$3,000 at Hong Kong in January 2027. Check your event page.
More in: Racing HYROX for charity →Are HYROX charity tickets cheaper?+
The entry price is lower, but you commit to raising much more than you save. In Washington, D.C., a charity Singles ticket was US$148 with a US$400 target. Treat it as a way into sold-out races and a reason to fundraise, not a discount.
More in: Racing HYROX for charity →What happens if I don't reach my HYROX fundraising target?+

More in: Racing HYROX for charity →Can I get into a sold-out HYROX race with a charity place?+
Often, yes. HYROX and its UK partners describe charity places as a route into races that are otherwise sold out. Check the event page for a charity ticket option, and be ready to commit to the minimum.
More in: Racing HYROX for charity →How can sponsors help me fundraise for HYROX?+
Sell logo spots and pass the money to your charity. On RoxSkin, a verified charity auction shows sponsors which registered charity you're racing for and what share they get, and we take half our usual commission. Opening prices are $50 per standard spot and $250 for the glutes spot.
More in: Racing HYROX for charity →Is a sponsor's payment tax-deductible as a donation?+
Generally no. A sponsor gets advertising in return, so its payment isn't a charitable gift, and you shouldn't promise a donation receipt or add Gift Aid to it. Sponsors and athletes should check the tax treatment with a local adviser.
More in: Racing HYROX for charity →How does RoxSkin verify a charity?+
