How to find a HYROX Doubles partner (and pick the right one)

Where to find a HYROX Doubles partner, how to test compatibility, what to agree before booking, and red flags.

The best places to find a HYROX Doubles partner are your own gym or HYROX class, local run clubs, community groups on Facebook, WhatsApp, Reddit and Discord, and threads for your specific race. The right partner runs at a similar pace, wants the same result as you, and can actually train with you. This guide covers where to look, how to check you're compatible, a simple partner agreement, your first sessions together, and the red flags to watch for.

Why finding a partner matters so much

In Doubles you run every kilometer together and enter and leave every station together, so you can't hide a mismatch. Your partner sets your running pace, shares your station plan and stands next to you at your most tired.

That's also why it's so rewarding. On Reddit's HYROX community you'll see people who are thrilled to be asked to be someone's Doubles partner, and others who say racing without friends feels like it's missing something. A good partner turns a hard race into a shared story.

Where can you find a HYROX Doubles partner?

Start close to home, where you can see people train before you commit.

  • Your gym or HYROX class

    Watch them trainBest first stop

Classmates already train the stations, and coaches often know who's looking. Ask the front desk or post on the gym board.

  • Run clubs

    Strong runnersGreat for pace

You'll know their pace before you ask. Many runners want a HYROX taster and can learn the stations.

  • Local Facebook and WhatsApp groups

    Fast repliesCity HYROX groups

Search "HYROX" plus your city. Post your race, division and target time.

  • Reddit and Discord

    Travel racesWider net

Good for "looking for a partner" posts and for asking where locals train.

  • Race-specific threads

    Same dateOne event

Search the event name plus "partner." Posts like "looking for a mixed doubles partner in Rome" are common for popular races.

  • RoxSkin athlete profiles

    Local athletesSee who's racing

Filter /athletes for athletes looking for a Doubles or Relay partner, then by race and country. Tick the same box on your own profile so others can find you.

There are also independent partner-matching sites and apps. They aren't run by HYROX, so vet anyone you meet there the same way you'd vet a stranger from a Facebook group.

Should you race with a friend or a stranger?

Both can work. What matters is fit, not how long you've known each other.

Friend or training buddy

  • You already trust each other and know how the other handles stress.
  • Training together is easy to schedule.
  • It's more fun, which helps you stay consistent.

New partner from a group or thread

  • You can pick for pace and station strengths, not just friendship.
  • It's easier to have honest conversations about goals and costs.
  • You need more time to build trust and communication.

If you race with a friend, still have the compatibility conversation. Plenty of friendships survive a bad race; fewer survive mismatched expectations nobody discussed.

How do you know if a partner is the right fit?

Check five things: running pace, station strengths, goals, logistics and money. The first matters most.

Running pace

You'll run all 8 km side by side, and the rules penalize one partner running ahead. Nobody has published a validated cutoff for how close your paces must be, so test it: run 3 to 5 km together at the slower partner's comfortable race pace. The faster runner should find it easy, and the slower runner shouldn't be straining to hold on.

Station strengths

Complementary is better than identical. If you're strong on the sleds and they're quick on the SkiErg and wall balls, you can split the work so you each cover the other. Our Doubles strategy guide shows how pairs split each station.

Goals

Agree on what success looks like. Is it finishing and having fun, a target time, a podium in your age group, or a Pro Doubles challenge? A partner chasing a personal best and a partner who wants a relaxed first race will both end the day frustrated.

Logistics

  • Do you live or train close enough to meet at least once a week?
  • Can you both race the same date and wave?
  • Who's traveling, and where are you staying?

Money

Decide how you'll split the ticket, the Flex add-on (if you buy it), travel, the hotel and any team kit. Settle it before anyone pays. Our ticket cost guide has typical prices.

Your partner agreement checklist

It sounds formal, but a 15-minute chat now saves a lot of awkwardness later. Agree on these before you book:

  • Goal: Finish, target time or ranking, and what you'll do if it's not your day.
  • Division: Women, Men, Mixed, or Pro Doubles. You can't switch division after booking in 26/27, so be sure.
  • Training: How many sessions a week together, which ones, and where.
  • Station plan: Who leans into which stations (you'll refine this later).
  • Costs: Who pays what, and when.
  • Injury or drop-out plan: What happens if one of you gets hurt or can't race.
  • Ticket changes: Whether you'll buy the Flex or Lite Flex add-on at checkout.

Your first sessions together

Treat the first few weeks as a trial for both of you.

  1. Easy run and talk. Run 3 to 5 km together at the slower partner's pace. Notice whether you can chat and whether the pace feels natural for both of you.
  2. Station sampler. Try four stations with short, alternating turns. Practice handovers and agree on one word for "your turn."
  3. Half simulation. Do four runs and four stations at race effort. Track your splits and how each of you recovers.
  4. Debrief. Talk about what felt good, what didn't, and whether you both still want to race together. It's fine to part ways now.
  5. Full simulation. Three to four weeks out, rehearse the whole race with your planned splits and pacing.

After that, it's normal training: your own sessions during the week, plus at least one joint session for running together and handovers.

Red flags to watch for

Not every keen partner is a good one. Think twice if they:

  • Won't share a recent run time or get vague about their fitness.
  • Keep canceling training sessions before you've even booked.
  • Run off ahead in training and don't adjust to you.
  • Push to book before you've trained together once.
  • Avoid talking about money or expect you to cover more than your share.
  • Criticize instead of encourage when a session goes badly.
  • Have very different goals and won't compromise.

Trust your gut. A partner who's difficult in a relaxed training session will be harder at kilometer seven with 100 wall balls still to go.

FAQ

Where do people find HYROX Doubles partners?

Most people find partners at their own gym or HYROX class, through run clubs, or in local Facebook, WhatsApp, Reddit and Discord groups. Race-specific threads are useful for travel races. You can also filter RoxSkin athlete profiles for athletes who are looking for a Doubles or Relay partner, and flag yourself as looking on your own profile.

How do I pick the right HYROX Doubles partner?

Prioritize a similar running pace, since you run every kilometer together. Then look for complementary station strengths, matching goals, workable logistics and an agreed way to split costs. Test it with a few training sessions before you book.

How close in running pace should Doubles partners be?

There's no official or validated cutoff. Run 3 to 5 km together at the slower partner's race pace. If the faster runner finds it easy and the slower runner isn't straining, you're a workable match.

What happens if my Doubles partner gets injured?

In 26/27 you can't move your ticket to another event, and partners can't be changed without a valid medical note. If you bought Flex or Lite Flex at checkout, you get one name change up to the morning before race day. Agree on a backup plan before you book.

Can I race HYROX Doubles with a stranger?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Meet and train together a few times before you book, have an honest conversation about goals and costs, and do a half simulation before you commit.

Where do people find HYROX friends?

Gyms that run HYROX classes, run clubs and local HYROX community groups are the easiest places to start. Group training sessions and race-specific threads for your event are other good ways to meet people.

How do I find a HYROX training partner or team?

Start close to home: your gym or HYROX class, local run clubs, and city HYROX groups on Facebook or WhatsApp, where you can see people train before you commit. Write a clear post with your city, target race and date, division, a recent 5 km or 10 km time and how often you can train. You can also filter RoxSkin athlete profiles for athletes looking for a Doubles or Relay partner. Then train together a few times before you book.

Next steps

Once you've found your partner, plan your splits with the Doubles strategy guide, check the HYROX Doubles rules, and pick your event on the race calendar.
