HYROX vs DEKA (FIT, MILE and STRONG): which should you race?

Format, running, loads, finish times, prices and divisions compared, which is harder, training carryover both ways, and whether to do both.

HYROX is one fixed race: 8 km of running split into eight 1 km runs, each followed by a station, and it takes a typical finisher about 1.5 hours. DEKA, run by Spartan, is a family of races built on the same 10 zones: DEKA FIT adds 5 km of running, DEKA MILE adds 1 mile, and DEKA STRONG has no running at all. For most people HYROX is the longer, more running-heavy endurance test, and DEKA FIT is shorter, faster and more varied. If running is your weak point or you want a lower-key entry, start with DEKA. If you want a big endurance goal, start with HYROX.

HYROX vs DEKA at a glance

Both are indoor fitness races with a fixed order of stations and runs between them, so your time at one event is broadly comparable with another. The difference is in how much you run, how heavy the work is, and how long you're out there.

A few things to note:

  • DEKA prices vary a lot. The listed "starting price" is the lowest tier and usually rises. Spartan's 2026 ticket page showed $15 to $155 for the Atlanta DEKA FIT, where the low end appears to be a spectator ticket. Our HYROX ticket price guide has real examples by city, such as £128 in London, €119 in Hamburg and US$195 in Washington, D.C. in October 2026.
  • DEKA's "average" times disagree. Spartan's US DEKA FIT pages all show the same average of 50:30, while its Torremolinos page shows 44:10. The identical US figure looks like a standard estimate, not a measured average, so treat both as rough.
  • DEKA's event count includes gyms. Spartan says there have been over 1,500 DEKA events in more than 12 countries, but most are MILE and STRONG races at affiliate gyms. Full DEKA FIT arena events are much rarer.

The courses in detail

HYROX

Every HYROX race is the same: 1 km run, then 1000 m SkiErg, 50 m sled push, 50 m sled pull, 80 m burpee broad jumps, 1000 m row, 200 m farmers carry, 100 m sandbag lunges and 100 wall balls, with a 1 km run before each one. The sleds are real weighted sleds. In Open, the push is 102 kg for women and 152 kg for men, including the sled, and Pro is heavier again. See what HYROX is and the divisions explained for the full picture.

DEKA

All DEKA formats share the same 10 zones, in this order:

  1. RAM reverse lunges 30 alternating reps holding a RAM (a ring-shaped weight), 25 kg for men and 15 kg for women.
  2. Row 500 m.
  3. Box jump-overs or step-overs 20 reps over a 24-inch box.
  4. Med ball sit-up throws 25 reps, 9 kg for men and 6.5 kg for women.
  5. SkiErg 500 m.
  6. Farmers carry 100 m with two 27 kg (men) or 18 kg (women) dumbbells.
  7. Air bike 25 calories.
  8. Dead ball wall-overs 20 reps, 27 kg for men and 18 kg for women.
  9. Sled push and pull 100 m on a magnetic-resistance sled (a "tank"), set to a resistance level rather than a weight.
  10. RAM burpees 20 reps, 20 kg for men and 10 kg for women.

In DEKA FIT you run 500 m before each zone, often as two 250 m laps. In MILE it's 160 m before each zone. STRONG has no running. MILE and STRONG, which are usually held at gyms, change three zones slightly: the sit-up ball taps the floor instead of hitting a target, the farmers carry goes back and forth over 10 m, and the dead ball goes over your shoulder instead of over a yoke.

Spartan also runs DEKA Ultra (five rounds of FIT: 50 zones and 25 km of running), DEKA ATLAS (10 heavy zones with a 30-minute cap), a Ruck division (FIT with a 30 lb or 20 lb pack), and the DEKA Trifecta for finishing STRONG, MILE and FIT in one calendar year.

Is DEKA harder than HYROX?

For most people, no. HYROX is harder overall because it's longer and has more running. DEKA isn't easy, though. It's hard in a different way.

  • HYROX is the bigger endurance test. You run 8 km instead of 5 km, the stations are longer (1000 m on the SkiErg and rower against 500 m in DEKA, 200 m of farmers carry against 100 m), and a typical finish is about twice as long as a typical DEKA FIT finish.
  • HYROX's sleds are heavier for most people. HYROX uses fixed weights that feel heavier on a slow floor. DEKA's magnetic tank gets harder the faster you push, so it behaves differently. Since one is set in kilograms and the other by resistance level, you can't compare them directly.
  • DEKA is faster and more varied. Ten short zones means more transitions, more movement types (air bike, box overs, sit-up throws, dead balls) and more time near your top speed. Elite DEKA FIT winners finish in about 30 to 35 minutes. At the 2025 Midwest event, the winners ran 30:33 (men) and 34:35 (women).
  • DEKA punishes missed reps. According to Fitness Experiment's summary of the May 2024 rule update, missed reps cost time: 10 seconds per lunge, box or sit-up rep, 20 seconds per burpee or dead ball rep. Doing less than 80% of a zone is a DQ. A 2026 Battle Bunker guide describes it differently: if you fail reps, your timing chip is cut and you can't win an award, but you can still finish. The sources disagree, so read the current rulebook. HYROX's 26/27 rules are strict too: an unfinished station costs you your official result, and lunge or broad jump faults cost 15 seconds each after one warning.

The athlete reports we found line up with this. One athlete who raced DEKA FIT in 2025 wrote on the Freeletics forum that it was "not as brutal as I imagined" and "very accessible". Spartan says its events have "close to a 100% completion rate". HYROX reports a finish rate above 98% and has no time limit. So both are very finishable if you train.

DEKA vs HYROX for beginners

DEKA is usually the gentler place to start. You can begin with a DEKA STRONG or MILE at a local gym, often for less money, without having to run far, and then step up to FIT. In July 2026, Spartan reported that 73% of the 2,200+ athletes at its Chicago event were racing DEKA for the first time.

HYROX is still very beginner-friendly. Open is designed for first-timers, there's no qualification, and Doubles lets you split the station work with a partner. The catch is the running: you need to be able to keep moving for well over an hour. If you can already run 5 km, the beginner training plan and first race guide will get you there. If you can't, DEKA STRONG or MILE is a good first goal while you build up your running.

Training carryover

The two races overlap a lot. Both use the rower, SkiErg, farmers carry, lunges, burpees and sleds, and both reward an aerobic engine that recovers quickly between efforts.

From HYROX to DEKA

Your engine carries over well. RMR Training coach Meg Jacoby suggests training HYROX-style if you want to do both, because an endurance base carries over to DEKA more easily than the other way around. What to add:

  • The DEKA-only movements: air bike, box jump-overs, med ball sit-up throws, dead ball wall-overs and RAM work. The air bike in particular catches HYROX athletes out, since HYROX doesn't use one.
  • Faster pacing. Half-length runs and shorter stations mean you can push harder from the start. Practice 500 m repeats at a faster pace than your HYROX 1 km pace.
  • Clean reps. Learn each zone standard so you don't give away time on penalties.

From DEKA to HYROX

This is the bigger jump. What to add:

  • Running volume. You go from 5 km (or less) to 8 km, in 1 km blocks, on tired legs. Build up to 1 km repeats and compromised runs straight off station work. The pace calculator helps you set realistic run splits.
  • Heavy sleds. Practice on a weighted sled if you can. The push and pull are where a lot of DEKA athletes lose time. See the sled push and pull tips.
  • Wall balls and long lunges. There are 100 wall balls at the end, and the 100 m sandbag lunge is much longer than DEKA's 30 RAM lunges.
  • Pacing for an hour-plus. DEKA FIT rewards going hard. In HYROX, going out too fast usually costs you in the second half.

Reasons people switch

Why people move from DEKA to HYROX

  • A bigger endurance goal. 8 km of running and a typical finish of around 1.5 hours is a different challenge.
  • More race options. HYROX lists 107 race weekends on six continents for 2026/27, so there may be more full-scale races near you.
  • Doubles and Relay. HYROX's partner formats are a big part of the event, with partners running together in Doubles and four people sharing the course in Relay.
  • A World Championship route through Pro and Doubles age groups. See how qualification works.

Why people move from HYROX to DEKA

  • Less running. STRONG and MILE suit people managing knee, shin or Achilles problems, and anyone who prefers gym work.
  • Cost and access. Gym-hosted STRONG events start around $35, and some popular HYROX races sell out. One forum user said they wanted to race HYROX but found "no seats".
  • Younger athletes and families. DEKA has a 10–13 age group and adult/youth teams. HYROX's minimum age is 16.
  • Variety. Ten zones and several formats keep things fresh, and the Trifecta gives you a year-long goal.

Can you do both?

Yes, and plenty of athletes do. A few ways to make it work:

  • Use DEKA STRONG or MILE as a training check. A short gym event every couple of months tests your station fitness without the recovery cost of a full race.
  • Pick one main race per season. Train mostly for that race and add the other race's specific movements in the last few weeks before it. Most coaches suggest building the HYROX engine first.
  • Leave room between big races. A HYROX race and a DEKA FIT are both hard efforts. Give yourself enough recovery between them that you can train properly again, rather than racing one tired.
  • Try the team formats. DEKA FIT teams split zones and middle runs between two partners, while HYROX Doubles partners run every kilometer together and split the stations. Both are good low-pressure ways to try the other sport. Here's how to race HYROX Doubles.

FAQ

What's the difference between HYROX and DEKA?

HYROX is a single race: eight 1 km runs, each followed by one of eight stations, scored on total time. DEKA is Spartan's family of races built on 10 zones. DEKA FIT adds 5 km of running in 500 m blocks, DEKA MILE adds one mile in 160 m blocks, and DEKA STRONG has no running.

Is DEKA harder than HYROX?

For most people, HYROX is harder because it's longer, has 8 km of running instead of 5 km, and uses heavier sleds. DEKA FIT is shorter and faster, with more movement variety and time penalties for missed reps, so it's a different kind of hard rather than an easier race.

Is DEKA or HYROX better for beginners?

DEKA is usually the easier entry point, because DEKA STRONG and MILE involve little or no running and are often held at local gyms. HYROX Open and Doubles are also built for first-timers, but you need to be able to keep moving for well over an hour.

How long does DEKA FIT take compared with HYROX?

Spartan lists an average of about 44 to 51 minutes for DEKA FIT, depending on the event page. A typical HYROX Open finish is about 1:28 for men and 1:36 for women. Elite DEKA FIT winners finish in about 30 to 35 minutes.

Does HYROX training work for DEKA?

Mostly, yes. The running, rowing, SkiErg, carries, lunges and burpees all carry over. Add the air bike, box jump-overs, med ball sit-up throws, dead ball wall-overs and faster 500 m running, and learn the DEKA rep standards.

Can you do both HYROX and DEKA?

Yes. Many athletes race one as their main event and use DEKA STRONG or MILE at a local gym as a training check. Plan recovery time between full races.
