HYROX and Spartan test different things, so neither is harder for everyone. HYROX is one fixed indoor race, 8 km of running split by eight strength stations, and it's harder on steady, sustained effort. Spartan is an outdoor obstacle race on changing terrain, from the 5 km Sprint to the 21 km Beast, and it's harder on grip, climbing skill and coping with hills, mud and weather. A Spartan Sprint and a HYROX Open race take similar time for most people, but a Beast is a much longer day than any HYROX race.

HYROX vs Spartan at a glance
Here are the two races compared on the same criteria:
| HYROX | Spartan Race | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Indoors, same layout and order at every race | Outdoors, course and terrain change at every venue |
| Distances | One format: 8 x 1 km runs + 8 stations | Sprint 5 km, Super 10 km, Beast 21 km, Ultra 50 km; Stadion 5 km in stadiums |
| What you do | 8 fixed stations (SkiErg, sleds, burpee broad jumps, row, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls) | 20 (Sprint), 25 (Super), 30 (Beast) or 60 (Ultra) obstacles: walls, rope climb, rigs, carries, crawls, spear throw |
| Penalties | Time: 15 s per fault on most stations; an incomplete station is a DQ | Open heats: 30 burpees per failed pass/fail obstacle. Elite and Age Group: penalty loop |
| Typical finish | Median about 1:28 (men's Open) and 1:36 (women's Open) | Seattle examples: Sprint about 1:30, Super 1:45 to 2:25, Beast about 4:45 to 5 hours |
| Divisions | Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay, Adaptive; five-year age groups | Open (non-competitive), Age Group (ten categories), Elite (prize money) |
| Entry price | Roughly US$130–200 equivalent for Singles, e.g. about £128 London, €119 Hamburg, US$195 Washington, D.C. | Starting prices e.g. £69.99–£134.98 (UK) or $104–$154 (Australia) from Sprint to Beast, rising closer to the date |
| Comparable times? | Yes, broadly, within a few minutes between venues | No, a time only means something for that course on that day |
| Suits | People who like a measurable, repeatable test and indoor racing | People who like trails, variety, climbing and getting muddy |
Format: indoor standardised vs outdoor terrain
HYROX is the same race everywhere: a 1 km run, then a station, eight times over, always in the same order with the same loads for your division. Open sled push loads, for example, are 102 kg for women and 152 kg for men, including the sled. It's indoors, so weather doesn't matter.
Spartan races are held outdoors at very different venues. Spartan describes its UK South West venue as "one of our flattest", with a mixture of terrain and plenty of small hills. Other Beast courses are mountain races, and Spartan warns of elevation changes and uneven terrain. Obstacle line-ups also change from event to event.
Distances
HYROX has one distance. Spartan has a ladder:
- Sprint: 5 km, 20 obstacles. Spartan pitches it at first-timers as well as competitive racers.
- Super: 10 km, 25 obstacles.
- Beast: 21 km, 30 obstacles. Mostly Spartan veterans, though first-timers do enter.
- Ultra: 50 km, 60 obstacles.
- Stadion: 5 km, 20 obstacles, run inside a stadium.
Finishing a Sprint, Super and Beast earns you a Trifecta, Spartan's main collection goal.
Obstacles vs stations
HYROX stations are gym movements you can practise exactly: you know every rep before you sign up. Spartan obstacles include skills you can only partly practise in a gym. According to Spartan's obstacle guide, these include a 4.8 m (16 ft) rope climb, walls of 4 to 8 ft, monkey bars and multi-rigs, a spear throw at a target 7.6 m (25 ft) away, and heavy carries such as the atlas stone (45 kg / 35 kg) and sandbag (27 kg / 18 kg), often on uneven ground or uphill. There are also barbed wire crawls, mud and, at some events, water crossings.
Penalties: burpees vs time
This is one of the biggest practical differences.
- Spartan: if you fail a pass/fail obstacle, such as missing the spear or falling off the monkey bars, non-competitive racers do 30 burpees (15 at Stadion races). Elite and Age Group racers run a penalty loop instead. Spartan strongly discourages skipping obstacles. Competitive racers can't accept outside help on obstacles and may be filmed for review.
- HYROX: there's no "fail" option. You must finish every station. Judges give no-reps and 15-second time penalties for faults on most stations, and an incomplete station means disqualification under the 26/27 rules. See how HYROX judging and penalties work.
Typical finish times
HYROX has large result datasets. Across about 700,000 results, the median finish was 1:27:56 for men's Open and 1:36:20 for women's Open. Read more in what a good HYROX time is.
Spartan has no equivalent public analysis we could find, so these are event examples, not averages for the sport. At Seattle's 2025 Trifecta weekend, the reported average durations were 1:30 for the Sprint, 2:25 for the Super and 4:45 for the Beast. A preview of the 2024 Seattle event estimated about 1:30 for the Sprint, about 1:45 for the Super and nearly five hours for the Beast. The two sources disagree by 40 minutes on the Super, which shows how much a course and its conditions change the numbers.
Divisions and age groups
HYROX ranks you overall in your division (Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay or Adaptive) and in a five-year age group, from under-24 up to 85–89. See HYROX divisions explained and HYROX over 40 and 50.
Spartan splits racers by heat type. Elite racers start first, are judged by referees and race for prize money. Age Group racers compete across ten age categories with podiums for each. Open heats are for casual racers, teams and newcomers, and are non-competitive.
Entry prices
Both vary by country, date and how early you book. HYROX Singles tickets usually cost the equivalent of roughly US$130 to US$200 (October 2026 examples are in the table, plus about HK$1,080 in Hong Kong), with Doubles and Relay cheaper per person. Full detail: how much HYROX costs.
Spartan prices rise with distance and as the date approaches. Two examples of starting prices: at the UK South West event, £69.99 (Sprint), £94.99 (Super) and £134.98 (Beast); at Lakes Entrance in Australia, $104, $124 and $154, plus $219 for the Ultra. So a Spartan Sprint is often cheaper than a HYROX Singles ticket, while a Beast costs about the same or more.
Can you compare times?
HYROX: broadly yes. One rulebook sets the course, loads and standards, so a time in one city means roughly the same as a time in another. Floors and run layouts still differ, so allow a few minutes either way.
Spartan: not really. Terrain, elevation and obstacles change, so a Sprint on a flat field and a Sprint on a ski slope aren't the same performance. Compare yourself with your own results on the same course, or your age group on the day.
Which is harder, HYROX or Spartan?
It depends on which Spartan distance you compare and what your weak point is.
- HYROX vs Spartan Sprint: similar time on your feet for many people, around an hour and a half. HYROX is usually the harder engine test, because there are no walking sections and the strength work is heavy and continuous. The Sprint is harder on skills: if you can't climb the rope or hold onto the rig, you'll pay in burpees.
- HYROX vs Spartan Super: the Super doubles the running distance and adds hills and more obstacles. For most people it's a longer and rougher day than HYROX.
- HYROX vs Spartan Beast: the Beast is clearly the bigger challenge for almost everyone. It's 21 km on trails with 30 obstacles, and the Seattle example averaged about three times as long as a typical HYROX finish.
There's also a mental difference. In HYROX, you know exactly what's coming, and the hard part is pacing your effort over eight rounds of work. In Spartan, you don't control the conditions. Mud, cold, wet grip and surprise obstacles can undo good fitness.
Training carryover: Spartan to HYROX
If you race Spartan, you bring a lot to HYROX: a running base, strong grip, comfort with carries and burpees, and toughness when it gets ugly. The farmers carry and sandbag lunges will feel familiar.
What usually needs work:
- Running speed on flat ground. HYROX runs are fast, flat and indoors. Trail fitness helps, but add race-pace intervals such as 1 km repeats.
- Heavy sleds. No Spartan obstacle quite matches pushing 152 kg (men's Open) for 50 m. Train the sled push and pull at race load. See sled push and pull tips.
- Wall balls and the machines. 100 wall balls to a set target, plus 1,000 m each on the SkiErg and rower, reward specific practice.
- Pacing. A Spartan course has natural slow sections on climbs and at obstacle queues. HYROX doesn't, so practise holding a steady effort for well over an hour. Our pacing and Roxzone guide and the HYROX pace calculator help you set targets.

Training carryover: HYROX to Spartan
HYROX athletes usually have a strong engine, good leg strength and solid burpee fitness, which helps if you do end up with penalty burpees. What's often missing:
- Grip and hanging strength. Monkey bars, rigs and rope climbs need you to hang and move on your hands. Train dead hangs, pull-ups and rope climbs.
- Trail and hill running. Run on uneven ground and practise climbs and descents. Road shoes and flat running don't prepare your ankles for a Beast.
- Obstacle skills. Practise wall climbs and the spear throw if you can find a gym or OCR park with them. Each missed spear costs 30 burpees in an Open heat.
- Longer efforts. For a Super or Beast, build long runs and long hikes well beyond HYROX race length.
- Awkward carries. Sandbags on your shoulder, buckets and stones are harder to hold than kettlebells.
Injury and risk differences
The risks are different, and the research measures them differently, so the numbers can't be compared directly.
- Spartan: a five-year study of 56 Spartan events in Eastern Canada (127,481 participants) found 18.7 medical presentations per 1,000 participants on race day, and 1.2 per 1,000 were taken to hospital. Lacerations made up 55% and musculoskeletal injuries 36%. That pattern fits outdoor terrain, wire crawls and climbing.
- HYROX: a 12-week study of HYROX athletes recorded 14.4 injuries per 1,000 hours of training, mostly overuse injuries (73%), with the knee most often affected and running the most-reported cause. See the most common HYROX injuries.
In short, Spartan's race-day risk is more about cuts, falls, cold and uneven ground. HYROX's risk mostly builds up in training, through running volume and repeated heavy leg work. In both sports, a gradual build-up and strength training are your best protection.
This is general information, not medical advice. Check with a qualified professional if you have an injury or health condition.
Why people switch from one to the other
Common reasons to move from Spartan to HYROX:
- You want a time you can compare from race to race.
- You'd rather race indoors, close to home, without travelling to a rural venue.
- You want to train for exactly what you'll face.
Common reasons to move from HYROX to Spartan:
- You want variety and the outdoors.
- You enjoy climbing and skill challenges, not just repeats of the same stations.
- You want a longer goal, like a Beast or a Trifecta.
Can you do both in one season?
Yes, and many hybrid athletes do. A few practical points:
- Space your races. One comparison guide suggests focusing on one race for 8 to 12 weeks before it, and not racing the two within 2 to 3 weeks of each other. That's a reasonable starting rule, and a Beast needs more recovery than a Sprint.
- Keep the shared base all year. Running, leg strength, grip and burpees help in both.
- Shift your focus before each race. Before HYROX: race-pace running, sleds and wall balls. Before Spartan: hills, trails, hanging and obstacles.
Our training hub has plans you can build around, and the race calendar shows HYROX events to plan around.
What about Tough Mudder and DEKA?
Tough Mudder is another obstacle event, owned by Spartan since 2020. Its 5K has 12+ obstacles and its 15K has 20+. Tough Mudder says its 5K and 15K are not races and aren't timed, and many obstacles are built around teamwork. It suits people who want an obstacle challenge with friends, without a clock.
DEKA, also run by Spartan, is an indoor fitness race closer to HYROX: DEKA FIT has 10 fitness zones and 5 km of running. We compare it in HYROX vs DEKA.
Which should you do?
- Choose HYROX if you want a repeatable, measurable race, prefer indoor events, and like training for an exact test.
- Choose Spartan if you love trails, want variety and skill challenges, don't mind mud and weather, and want distances to work up through.
- Do both if you enjoy both. Start with a HYROX Open race and a Spartan Sprint, then decide which you want to go further in.
FAQ
Is HYROX harder than a Spartan race?
It depends on the distance. Compared with a Spartan Sprint, HYROX is usually harder on endurance and strength, while the Sprint is harder on obstacle skills and grip. A Spartan Super, and especially a Beast, is a longer and harder day than HYROX for most people.
What's the difference between HYROX and Spartan?
HYROX is an indoor race with the same 8 x 1 km runs and eight fixed stations everywhere, scored on time. Spartan is an outdoor obstacle race on changing terrain, with distances from 5 km to 50 km and 20 to 60 obstacles, and burpee or loop penalties for failed obstacles.
What's the penalty for failing a Spartan obstacle?
In Spartan's US rules, non-competitive racers do 30 burpees for a failed pass/fail obstacle (15 at Stadion races), while Elite and Age Group racers run a penalty loop. Rules vary by region and season, so check your event's rulebook.
Which is better for a beginner?
Both welcome beginners. A Spartan Sprint or a HYROX Open race are the usual starting points. Start with what HYROX is and a beginner training plan if you're leaning towards HYROX.
What makes HYROX harder than other obstacle races?
HYROX isn't an obstacle race, and it isn't harder on everything. Where it is harder is sustained effort. Compared with a Spartan Sprint, there are no natural slow sections like climbs or obstacle queues, and the strength work is heavy and continuous, such as a 152 kg sled push in men's Open. There's no "fail" option either: you must finish every station, and an incomplete station is a DQ. Spartan is harder on skill, grip and terrain, and its Super and Beast are longer days.
What makes HYROX different from Spartan Race or Tough Mudder?
HYROX is an indoor race with the same 8 x 1 km runs and eight fixed stations in the same order everywhere, scored on time, so results are broadly comparable between venues. Spartan is an outdoor obstacle race on changing terrain, from the 5 km Sprint to the 50 km Ultra, with burpee or loop penalties for failed obstacles. Tough Mudder, owned by Spartan since 2020, runs 5K and 15K obstacle events that aren't timed and are built around teamwork.
